H.E. Governor Mohamud Ali, this evening made an inspection visit to the newly completed 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗹𝗼 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗜𝗩 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹, ahead of its official commissioning tomorrow.

The Governor, accompanied by senior County Government officials and the Department of Health Services team, toured the modern facility to assess its readiness for launch and service delivery.

Marsabit County has taken another step towards elevating the quality of healthcare training and diagnostic excellence in the region following the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹, the 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, and the 𝗞𝗠𝗧𝗖 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝘂 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀.

The agreement establishes a structured, mutually reinforcing partnership designed to advance medical laboratory education, professional mentorship, and hands-on student attachment programmes. Through this collaboration, trainee laboratory professionals from KMTC Meru Campus will gain access to real-time clinical exposure, modern diagnostic platforms, high-volume testing environments, and guided mentorship from seasoned laboratory experts based in Marsabit.

This framework ultimately positions Marsabit County Teaching & Referral Hospital and the Marsabit Regional Laboratory as emerging hubs of diagnostic excellence, specialized training, and innovation in Northern Kenya.

H.E. Governor Mohamud Ali has today officially launched a suite of major health infrastructure projects at the Laisamis Sub-County Hospital, a KSh 90 million investment that now anchors the delivery of modern, accessible, and reliable medical services to communities in the southern region of the county.

The investment is one of the most comprehensive health infrastructure upgrades ever undertaken in Laisamis Sub-County. The package includes the establishment of a hospital power plant, the installation of a modern surgical theatre, the development of an X-ray and diagnostic complex, establishment of a dental unit, equipping of male and female wards, the construction of staff housing units, all these by the County Government of Marsabit and the construction of a maternity complex in partnership with the Safaricom Foundation.

For years, the residents of Laisamis Sub-County have endured long and difficult journeys to access essential medical care. The new theatre and power plant have already transformed service delivery at the facility. Reliable power supply has enabled the hospital to operate critical medical equipment without interruption, while the newly operational theatre has made it possible for the hospital to conduct advanced surgical procedures, including over 40 cesarean section successful deliveries since becoming functional.

Before this development, mothers with obstetric complications were routinely referred to Marsabit County Teaching and Referral Hospital, a journey that, for many, was fraught with delays and risk. Today, such cases are managed promptly and safely within Laisamis, drastically reducing referral rates, improving maternal outcomes, and reinforcing public confidence in the county’s healthcare system.

The maternity complex, developed through a collaborative partnership between the County Government of Marsabit and the Safaricom Foundation, further expands the hospital’s capacity to offer dignified and well-equipped spaces for maternal and neonatal care. Complemented by the newly completed diagnostic and dental units by the County , the hospital now stands as a fully integrated healthcare facility capable of addressing a wide spectrum of medical needs locally.

Beyond medical care, the inclusion of staff housing units underscores a holistic approach to healthcare delivery, recognizing that sustainable service provision depends equally on the welfare, motivation, and stability of the health workforce.

The Laisamis Sub-County Hospital development is part of Marsabit County’s broader health investment agenda aimed at bridging regional disparities, improving access to specialized services, and aligning county health priorities with national universal health coverage objectives.

As the facility begins this new phase of expanded operations, it is expected to serve as a regional referral point for surrounding health centers, easing pressure on the Marsabit County Teaching and Referral Hospital and enhancing overall system efficiency.

Marsabit County Teaching and Referral Hospital has entered a new chapter in diagnostic excellence with the decommissioning of its previous 64-slice CT scanner and the ongoing installation of a state-of-the-art 𝟭𝟮𝟴-𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 (𝗖𝗧) 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿.

This upgrade is a technological shift in precision medicine, patient safety, and advanced clinical care for the people of Marsabit and the greater Northern Kenya region.

The 128-slice CT scanner is among the most sophisticated imaging technologies in contemporary healthcare. By employing 𝟭𝟮𝟴 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗿𝗮-𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, the scanner is capable of capturing multiple cross-sectional images of the body in a single rapid rotation. These images are then reconstructed into highly detailed, three-dimensional views of organs, tissues, and blood vessels, enabling clinicians to diagnose conditions with unparalleled accuracy.

Its applications are vast and lifesaving. Specialists can now visualize the heart in motion, detect coronary artery blockages with speed and precision, and assess complex cardiovascular conditions without invasive procedures. Beyond cardiology, the scanner supports a broad spectrum of disciplines, from neurology in the evaluation of stroke and brain injuries, to oncology in the staging of cancers, to trauma care where swift imaging can be the difference between life and loss.

For patients, the benefits are equally profound. Reduced scanning times mean less exposure to radiation, greater comfort during examinations, and quicker turnaround in diagnosis. For doctors, it means sharper insights, more confident decision-making, and a stronger foundation for timely intervention.

As the engineers complete installation over the coming days, CT scan services at MCTRH remain temporarily suspended, and patients requiring imaging will be referred to facilities outside the county.

The Regional East African Public Health Laboratory located within Marsabit County Teaching and Referral Hospital has advanced its operational capacity. Following an intensive molecular diagnostics training programme implemented in collaboration with the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the laboratory is now equipped to perform real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing.
This upgrade introduces the ability to conduct advanced diagnostics for a range of high-priority public health conditions.

The laboratory is now able to test for viral haemorrhagic fevers including Dengue, Chikungunya, Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), Rift Valley Fever, and Yellow Fever. Diagnostic capacity also covers bacterial infections such as Brucella and Leptospira. In addition, the laboratory can screen for diseases such as Leishmaniasis, Mpox, Influenza, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.

The availability of these services marks a shift in the county’s capacity to manage public health risks. With molecular diagnostics in place, the laboratory can contribute to more responsive disease monitoring frameworks. It is now positioned to support earlier identification of outbreaks, guide patient care through timely test results, and enhance the quality of data that informs public health interventions.

Health facilities across the county are encouraged to align their sample referral processes with the operational framework of the regional laboratory. Proper coordination will enable the system to function optimally and promote uniformity in response to emerging health threats.

This development reflects a broader direction in the strengthening of laboratory-based surveillance. The enhanced facility now stands as a public health resource with the capability to support epidemic intelligence, inform health policy, and reinforce regional readiness for disease outbreaks.

This advancement positions the Marsabit Regional Laboratory as a centre for public health diagnostics and surveillance. The County Government led by H.E Governor Mohamud M. Ali will continue to support systems that improve disease detection and control across the region.
