Android devices will now restart after three days of inactivity due to a new optional security feature introduced in Google Play Services version 25.14, rolled out in April 2025. This feature automatically reboots a device that remains locked for three consecutive days, placing it in a "Before First Unlock" (BFU) state. In this state, data is encrypted, biometric authentication (like fingerprint or face unlock) is disabled, and a passcode or PIN is required to access the device. The reboot enhances security by making it harder for unauthorized users, such as thieves or law enforcement using forensic tools, to access data on a lost or stolen device. This mirrors Apple’s "Inactivity Reboot" feature for iOS, which restarts iPhones after four days of inactivity. The feature applies to Android phones and tablets but not to devices like TVs or smartwatches. It’s optional, and users may not receive a specific notification when it triggers, though the device will prompt for a passcode upon restart.
