Why Do We Need to Continue to Have Faith in God?

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

Faith is not just the starting point of our relationship with God—it’s the sustaining power that carries us through every season of life. In a world full of uncertainty, trials, and temptations, it can be easy to let doubt creep in. But God’s Word calls us not just to have faith once, but to continue in faith.

So today, we ask the question: Why do we need to continue to have faith in God? Let’s turn to Scripture and discover the reasons why enduring faith is vital for every believer.

1: Because God is Faithful, Even When Life Isn’t

Scripture: Lamentations 3:22–23 (ESV)

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

God’s faithfulness is not conditional. He is not good only when life is good. He is good because He is God. When we walk through valleys, our continued faith reminds us that God’s promises still stand. His character never changes, even when our circumstances do.

Application:
When life is falling apart, faith reminds us that God is still holding it together. Faith helps us interpret our trials through the lens of God’s eternal purposes.

2: Because Faith Is the Key to Our Relationship With God

Scripture: Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

Faith is not optional; it’s foundational. It’s how we approach God, trust Him, and grow in Him. Continuing in faith keeps our hearts aligned with His will and our eyes fixed on His goodness.

Application:
When our faith remains strong, our spiritual connection with God remains alive. Prayer, worship, obedience—they all flow from an ongoing trust in God.

3: Because Faith Fuels Hope and Endurance

Scripture: Romans 5:3–5 (NIV)

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame…”

Faith doesn’t eliminate hardship—it empowers us to endure it. The Christian life is not a sprint but a marathon. We need a faith that endures, a faith that believes not only in what God has done, but in what He will do.

Application:
Continued faith gives birth to unshakable hope. It’s what helps you keep walking when you don’t see the answer yet.

4: Because Jesus Calls Us to Abide

Scripture: John 15:5 (ESV)

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

To “abide” means to remain—to stay connected. Faith is not a one-time event but a daily decision to trust and follow Jesus. As we continue in faith, we remain in Him—and He works in and through us.

Application:
Your fruitfulness in life is directly tied to your faithfulness to Jesus. Continue to believe, continue to abide.

So, why do we need to continue to have faith in God?
• Because He is faithful—even when life is not.
• Because faith is the foundation of our relationship with Him.
• Because faith gives us strength to endure and hope to keep going.
• Because Jesus invites us to abide in Him daily.

Faith is not a moment; it’s a movement. It’s not just how we start the race—it’s how we finish it. And the good news is: God is with us every step of the way!

Is Faith the Same Thing as Trusting God?

“Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” Psalms 9:10

It’s common to hear the words faith and trust used interchangeably. People say things like “have faith in God” or “just trust Him”—and both are absolutely biblical ideas. But are they the same thing?

Today, we’ll dig into Scripture to understand the relationship between faith and trust, and what it means to live with both in our walk with God.

1: Faith Is Believing—Trust Is Depending

Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Faith is believing in who God is and what He has said. It’s the conviction that He exists, that His Word is true, and that His promises are sure—even when we don’t see immediate evidence.

But trust goes a step further—it’s how we live in light of our faith. Trust is active dependence on God. It’s faith applied.

Illustration:
Think of a chair. Faith believes the chair can hold your weight. Trust is when you actually sit in it. Faith says God can; trust says, I will rely on Him to do it.

2: You Can Have Faith Without Trusting Fully

James 2:19 (NIV)

“You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.”

James reminds us that belief alone isn’t enough. Demons believe in God, but they don’t trust Him. It’s possible to believe God exists but still live in fear, anxiety, or self-reliance. That’s not trust.

Application:
Do you believe God can provide—but still stress about money?
Do you believe God is in control—but still try to control everything?
That’s a sign faith isn’t yet trust.

3: Trust Grows From a Relationship With God

Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Faith begins when we believe in who God is. But trust grows as we walk with Him and experience His faithfulness.

Trust says, “Even when I don’t understand, I choose to submit.”
Trust says, “I believe God knows better than I do.”

Illustration:
A child may believe their parent loves them (faith), but trust is shown when they hold their hand while crossing the street, even if they’re scared or don’t understand why.

4: Jesus Calls Us to Both Believe and Trust

John 14:1 (NLT)

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.”

Jesus was speaking to disciples facing fear, loss, and uncertainty. He didn’t just call them to believe in who He was, but to trust Him even when things didn’t make sense.

Application:
God is not just asking us to believe He exists—He’s asking us to build our lives on that belief.
Trust is faith in action—especially when life is hard.

So, is faith the same as trusting God?
They are closely connected—but not exactly the same.
• Faith is the foundation—believing in who God is and what He has promised.
• Trust is the structure—choosing to rely on God in every situation.

You need both. Faith begins the relationship. Trust deepens it!

When Our Faith Falters!

Mark 9:24
“Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!’”

Have you ever had a moment where you believed God—but still had doubts? Where you prayed, but part of you wondered, “Is He really going to show up?” That’s exactly where we find the father in Mark 9:24. His words are raw, unpolished, and deeply human:

“I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

This is not the cry of someone who’s figured it all out—it’s the cry of someone standing in the tension of faith and fear, belief and doubt.

And here’s the good news: Jesus doesn’t reject him. He responds.

1. The Tension Between Faith and Doubt

The father came to Jesus hoping for a miracle for his demon-possessed son. The disciples had already failed, and the situation looked hopeless. So when Jesus asks if he believes, he says:

“I do believe—help my unbelief!”

Faith and doubt often coexist in the same heart.
• You can trust God and still have questions.
• You can believe in His power but feel unsure in your pain.

Faith isn’t the absence of doubt—it’s choosing to bring your doubt to Jesus anyway.

2. Honesty is the First Step Toward Healing

This man didn’t fake it. He didn’t pretend to be strong. He said what we often feel but are afraid to admit:

“I’m trying to believe, but I’m struggling.”

And that honesty opened the door for Jesus to work.

God is not intimidated by your doubts. What He wants is honesty.
• David questioned in the Psalms.
• Job wrestled with God’s silence.
• Thomas needed to touch the wounds.
And Jesus met them all with compassion.

3. God Responds to Imperfect Faith

Sometimes we feel like our faith has to be flawless for God to move. But here’s the miracle:

Jesus healed the boy anyway.

God isn’t waiting for your perfect performance—He responds to genuine pursuit.
• You don’t need full certainty to come to Jesus.
• You just need a heart that says, “Lord, help me.”

He doesn’t need you to have it all together—He just needs you to bring what you have.

4. Jesus Meets Us Where We Are

In this story, Jesus doesn’t shame the man for doubting—He steps in with power and mercy.

That’s the kind of Savior we serve:
• One who meets us in the middle of our faltering faith.
• One who answers weak prayers prayed with sincere hearts.

Jesus didn’t need perfect faith to perform a perfect miracle.

When your faith falters:
• Don’t fake it—be honest.
• Don’t run from God—run to Him.
• Don’t disqualify yourself—He doesn’t.

So if today you’re saying, “Lord, I believe—but I’m struggling to hold on,” know this:

You’re exactly where grace meets faith.

Because God doesn’t need your faith to be perfect—He just wants it to be real!

HOW CAN I KNOW GOD IS WORKING IN THIS SITUATION?

Each and everyone of us face challenges, and there are times when we wonder, “Is God really working in my situation?” When things seem unclear, delayed, or difficult, doubt can creep in. However, even when we cannot see or feel it, God is always at work.

“But Jesus replied, “My Father is always working, and so am I.””
‭‭John‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬ ‭NLT‬‬

1. God Works Even When We Don’t See It

Often, God is moving in ways we cannot immediately perceive. Just because we don’t see progress doesn’t mean He isn’t working.
• Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV) – “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
• Example: Joseph’s Journey (Genesis 37-50) – Joseph was sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned. It seemed like God was absent, but all along, He was positioning Joseph for a great purpose.

Application:
Just because you don’t see immediate answers doesn’t mean God isn’t working. His plans are higher than ours.

2. God Works Through Delays and Waiting

Waiting is often part of God’s process. Delays don’t mean denial.
• Romans 8:28 (NIV) – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
• Example: Abraham and Sarah – They waited many years for God’s promise of a son. Though it seemed impossible, God was working in the background to fulfill His word.

Application:
If you’re in a waiting season, trust that God is preparing something greater. Don’t mistake silence for absence.

3. God Works Through Challenges and Suffering

Sometimes, God allows difficulties not to harm us, but to refine, strengthen, and position us for greater things.
• James 1:2-4 (NIV) – “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
• Example: The Cross – Jesus’ suffering on the cross seemed like a defeat, but it was actually God’s greatest victory for humanity.

Application:
Trials are not a sign that God has abandoned you. Often, they are where His power is revealed the most.

4. Signs That God Is Working in Your Situation

Even if you don’t see immediate change, look for these signs that God is at work:
1. You have peace despite uncertainty (Philippians 4:7).
2. Doors are opening or closing in unexpected ways (Revelation 3:7).
3. You feel stretched, but your faith is growing (2 Corinthians 12:9).
4. God is sending people, encouragement, or confirmations (Proverbs 16:9).
5. Looking back, you see His hand guiding you (Psalm 37:23).

Trust That God Is Working!

Even when we don’t understand, God is moving in ways beyond our comprehension.

Final Encouragement:
• When you don’t see the answer, trust His process.
• When you don’t feel His presence, stand on His promises.
• When things don’t make sense, remember He is still in control.

Continuing to Follow and Build According to the Architectural Plans of God!

1 Corinthians 3:10-11
“By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Every great building begins with a master plan. Before construction starts, architects carefully design every detail to ensure the building is strong, functional, and lasting. In the same way, God has an architectural plan for our lives, our churches, and His kingdom. Our role is to follow His blueprint faithfully and build according to His instructions.

1. God as the Master Architect

God is the ultimate architect of our lives and His church. He has a perfect plan for us:
• Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord…”
• Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Just as a builder does not question the architect’s blueprint, we must trust God’s design and follow His instructions without compromise.

2. The Foundation Must Be Jesus Christ

In 1 Corinthians 3:11, Paul reminds us that no other foundation can be laid except Jesus Christ.
• A weak foundation leads to a collapsed structure. If we build our lives on human wisdom, success, or self-effort, we will fail.
• Jesus is the solid rock (Matthew 7:24-27). When we build on Him, we remain strong even in storms.

3. Building with the Right Materials

Paul continues in 1 Corinthians 3:12-13, saying that we must build with quality materials—gold, silver, and costly stones—not wood, hay, or straw.
• Gold, Silver, and Costly Stones – Represents faith, obedience, and the fruits of the Spirit.
• Wood, Hay, and Straw – Represents worldly pursuits, selfish desires, and shallow faith.

Everything we build will be tested by fire. Only what is built according to God’s plan will last.

4. Following God’s Blueprint Daily

How do we ensure we are following God’s architectural plan?
• Study His Word – The Bible is our blueprint (Psalm 119:105).
• Pray for Guidance – Seek God’s wisdom in every decision (Proverbs 3:5-6).
• Live in Obedience – Align your actions with God’s commands (James 1:22).
• Stay Connected to the Church – God’s plan is not just for individuals but for His whole body (Hebrews 10:25).

God has an incredible plan for your life, but it requires faithfulness to His design. Are you following His blueprint, or are you trying to build on your own? Let us commit to being wise builders, ensuring that everything we do aligns with the foundation of Jesus Christ and the architectural plans of God.

Challenge:
Evaluate what you are building in your life. Are you using materials that will stand the test of time? Ask God to help you align every aspect of your life with His divine blueprint.

IS GOD OUR LAST RESORT/OPTION?

Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

When Do We Turn to God?

Many people treat God as a last resort—someone they call on only when all else fails. When life is smooth, they rely on their own strength, but when trouble comes, they suddenly cry out to Him. The question is, is God our last option, or is He our first and only true refuge?

The Problem with Seeking God Last

• Delayed Dependence: When we only turn to God in desperation, it reveals a heart that trusts in itself first. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
• Unnecessary Suffering: Many people struggle longer than they need to because they try to handle things alone before seeking God.
• God Desires Relationship, Not Just Rescue: God is not just a “911 call” for emergencies—He longs for daily communion with us (James 4:8).

God Should Be Our First Response, Not Our Last Resort

• Prayer Before Panic: Philippians 4:6 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
• Faith Before Fear: The disciples in Mark 4:35-41 waited until the storm nearly drowned them before waking Jesus. Had they turned to Him first, they would have had peace in the storm.
• Worship Before Worry: In 2 Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat faced a great army but sought God first—and God fought the battle for him.

A Life Anchored in God, Not Just a Crisis Call

• Daily Dependence: Jesus taught us to pray “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). A daily walk with God prepares us for life’s challenges.
• Unshakable Faith: Those who trust God consistently are not shaken when storms come (Matthew 7:24-27).
• God’s Invitation: Matthew 11:28 – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Make God Your First Choice!

Is God your last resort, or your first response? Don’t wait for a crisis to seek Him. Walk with Him daily, trust Him completely, and call on Him in every season of life.

Final Challenge
• Will you wait until trouble comes, or will you start seeking Him now?
• Make a commitment today: God will not be my last resort—He will be my first and only refuge.
