The Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination , in partnership with Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) , Kenya Revenue Authority and Transporters Associations, successfully concluded a sensitization campaign for transit truck drivers at Busia and Malaba border points, focusing on Customs Processes and Procedures.

Through the sensitization sessions, drivers were equipped with practical knowledge to help them better understand and comply with customs procedures, minimize avoidable errors and delays, and facilitate smoother interactions with border and customs authorities.

Beyond improving compliance, such initiatives contribute directly to reducing border delays, improving cargo transit times and lowering the cost of doing business along the Northern Corridor. More efficient border crossings mean more predictable journeys for transporters, faster movement of goods for traders and stronger regional supply chains.

Transit truck drivers are at the heart of cargo movement along the Northern Corridor. Equipping them with a better understanding of customs requirements and border procedures is critical to ensuring smoother and more efficient movement of goods across borders.

This initiative also demonstrates the importance of continued collaboration among corridor institutions, customs authorities, transporters and drivers in addressing operational challenges that affect the movement of goods across the region.

Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority remains committed to working with Member States and corridor stakeholders to remove barriers to seamless movement, enhance transport efficiency and advance trade facilitation and regional integration.

Yesterday in Nairobi, the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority and TradeMark Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that marks a significant step towards enhancing regional trade facilitation and transport efficiency along the Northern Corridor.

The MoU establishes a strategic framework for cooperation between the two institutions, reinforcing their shared commitment to improving the performance of one of Africa's most important trade and transport corridors.

Through this partnership, NCTTCA and TMA will collaborate in key areas including:

📈Corridor performance monitoring and data-driven decision-making,
🌐Trade facilitation and the removal of Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs),
💻Digitalisation and information sharing to improve corridor efficiency,
📚Policy support and sustainable logistics systems,
📑Capacity building and stakeholder coordination;
🤝Joint implementation of strategic regional initiatives and priority projects.

The signing also builds on a strong and productive partnership between NCTTCA and TradeMark Africa.

Over the years, the two institutions have worked together on initiatives such as the Northern Corridor Transport Observatory, the development of econometric models to quantify the impact of Non-Tariff Barriers, the reimagining of One Stop Border Posts, and joint corridor monitoring aimed at identifying and addressing trade bottlenecks.

This renewed collaboration reaffirms our shared vision of a more efficient, connected and competitive Northern Corridor that supports regional integration, facilitates trade and contributes to sustainable economic growth across the region.

Today, the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority and the UN Environment Programme signed a Funding Agreement that marks an important step towards building a cleaner, more efficient and more inclusive freight transport system across the Northern Corridor.

Through this partnership, NCTTCA and UNEP will work together to:

🚛Advance cleaner freight transport
♀️Promote a more inclusive freight sector

This partnership matters because the Northern Corridor is one of Africa's busiest trade routes, connecting the Port of Mombasa with Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda. Greener and more inclusive freight transport will help improve trade efficiency, reduce emissions, strengthen climate resilience and create more equitable economic opportunities throughout the region.

Building on years of collaboration between NCTTCA and UNEP to advance green freight transport, today's agreement reinforces a shared commitment to transforming the Northern Corridor into a sustainable, competitive and climate-resilient trade corridor that delivers benefits for people, businesses and the environment.

𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭

The Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority , in collaboration with Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure , Transport Development Agency and other national stakeholders, convened a Validation Workshop for the Feasibility Study, Detailed Engineering Designs and Master Plan for the proposed 𝗥𝘂𝗸𝗼𝗺𝗼 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗮𝗿𝗱 in Gicumbi District.

The workshop provides a platform for government institutions, transport operators, private sector representatives and other stakeholders to review, validate and enrich the study findings, engineering designs and long-term development vision before implementation. Their valuable contributions will ensure that the project responds effectively to the needs of Northern corridor users while aligning with national and regional transport priorities.

Once implemented, the Rukomo Truck Holding Yard will serve as a modern Roadside Station (RSS) designed to improve freight transport efficiency, road safety and driver welfare along the Northern Corridor. The facility will provide secure parking for trucks, quality rest areas, sanitation facilities, and other essential amenities that reduce roadside parking and driver fatigue.

It is also expected to ease congestion in urban centres, enhance cargo movement, strengthen supply chain reliability, improve security for goods and vehicles, and stimulate local economic development through increased business opportunities and job creation.

Today, the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority held its 38th Meeting of the Council of Ministers in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together Ministers and Permanent Secretaries from the Northern Corridor Member States to review progress and set the strategic direction for the Authority.

The meeting was chaired by Hon. Egide Nijimbere, Minister for Infrastructure, Social Housing, Transport and Equipment of the Republic of Burundi and Chairperson of the Northern Corridor Council of Ministers, who commended Member States for the successful deliberations and urged them to expedite the implementation of the Council's decisions, particularly in infrastructure development, policy harmonisation and resource mobilisation for priority regional projects.

The Council applauded the continued improvement in the performance of the Northern Corridor, including increased cargo throughput at the Port of Mombasa, growth in transit volumes, and strengthened collaboration with development partners.

To further facilitate trade and improve the movement of goods across the region, the Council directed the Secretariat to intensify efforts to eliminate non-tariff barriers, fast-track customs systems integration, implement the Green Freight Strategy 2030, and closely monitor implementation of the updated Northern Corridor Infrastructure Master Plan.

The Council also approved the Annual Work Plan and Budget for the 2026/2027 Financial Year and called on Member States to fast-track the signing and ratification of the revised Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Agreement.

These decisions reaffirm the Member States' shared commitment to building a more connected, efficient, resilient and sustainable Northern Corridor that drives regional trade, economic growth and prosperity.

Today, the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority convened its 61st Executive Committee Meeting, bringing together six Member States of the Northern Corridor to review progress in the implementation of key corridor programmes and initiatives.

The meeting focused on assessing achievements, addressing emerging challenges, and evaluating measures aimed at improving trade facilitation, transport efficiency, and regional connectivity.

The Executive Committee will also consider the proposed FY 2026/2027 Budget and Workplan, while deliberating on priority interventions to enhance corridor performance and eliminate barriers to trade.

Through strategic guidance and oversight, the Executive Committee continues to advance the objectives of the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Agreement, ensuring coordinated implementation of corridor activities and promoting seamless movement of goods and people across the region.

The Executive Committee comprises Permanent Secretaries or their equivalents from the Northern Corridor Member States, providing strategic oversight and policy direction for the implementation of Corridor programmes.

Today, the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority received a courtesy visit from the representatives of the
JICA - Japan International Cooperation Agency

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss ongoing developments in regional transport and trade facilitation, as well as the role of strategic partnerships in advancing regional integration.

The engagement also served as a platform for exchanging perspectives on key priorities aimed at improving connectivity, efficiency, and sustainable economic growth along the Northern Corridor.
