BATUK Cancels Ex Haraka Storm After Kenya Withholds Licences
The British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) has cancelled Exercise Haraka Storm, set for Laikipia from September to November 2026, after Kenya failed to issue the required licences.
The move affects only this exercise; BATUK’s presence and other activities continue. The UK will hold the training outside Kenya instead and expressed regret over the impact on local communities and businesses.
It reaffirmed the long-standing UK–Kenya defence partnership and said future exercises can resume once approvals are granted.

In the Boni Forest corridor under Operation Amani Boni, KDF troops carried out proactive route clearance and dominance patrols along major supply routes in Lamu County. The goal was to secure key lines of communication used by both security forces and local communities.
During one of these patrols, soldiers detected a concealed pressure-plate IED. The discovery led to a wider search. In follow-up operations, troops located three more IEDs placed approximately 5.1 km, 8.27 km, and 8.4 km along the routes in the Sarira area — a strategic location bordering Lamu and Garissa counties, close to the Somalia border.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists moved in quickly. All four Improvised Explosive Devices were safely neutralised — the first by controlled detonation and the rest by EOD teams. No casualties or damage were reported.
The successful operation prevented what could have been several coordinated attacks and highlights the importance of constant vigilance, intelligence work, and systematic Counter-IED efforts in keeping the area secure.
KDF operations in the region remain active, with troops maintaining pressure on threat networks and protecting vital supply routes.

The Insignia of the 11th Battalion, The Kenya Rifles (11KR)

This was the mother unit of General (Rtd) Daudi Tonje.

Formed from the 11th (Kenya) Battalion of the King’s African Rifles, 11KR was one of the original infantry battalions of the Kenya Army at independence.

In January 1964, the battalion mutinied at Lanet Barracks over pay, conditions of service, and other grievances. It was subsequently disbanded by the government, with vetted personnel later forming the nucleus of the present-day 1st Battalion, The Kenya Rifles (1KR).

Unlike many military units whose lineages continue through redesignation or reactivation, 11KR was never reconstituted and no longer exists as an active battalion.
