Edwin Sifuna: From Political Strategist to One of Kenya’s Most Vocal Leaders
Edwin Watenya Sifuna’s political journey is a story of persistence, controversy and rising influence. A trained lawyer, Sifuna entered national politics through opposition organising and became closely associated with Raila Odinga and the ODM movement.
His first major attempt at elective politics came in 2017, when he sought the ODM nomination for Kanduyi parliamentary seat but did not secure the ticket. He later contested the Nairobi Senate seat, finishing second to Johnson Sakaja.
Rather than disappearing from politics, Sifuna became even more influential. In 2018, he was appointed ODM Secretary-General, a position that placed him at the centre of the party’s political machinery. His sharp speeches, aggressive defence of the opposition and ability to command public attention quickly made him one of ODM’s most recognisable faces.
In the 2022 General Election, Sifuna returned to the Nairobi Senate race and won, finally securing an elective position. His role in the Senate further elevated his national profile, and he became one of the most outspoken figures in Kenyan politics.
Following the death of Raila Odinga, Sifuna’s political future became a major subject of debate. His disagreements within ODM and his continued popularity among sections of opposition supporters have raised a bigger question: Could Edwin Sifuna become one of the major political figures of Kenya’s next generation?
From losing his first major electoral battle to becoming a senator and one of Kenya’s most recognisable political voices, Sifuna’s journey shows that in politics, one defeat does not necessarily mean the end of the road.
What do you think? does Sifuna have what it takes to become Kenya’s next major political kingmaker? 🇰🇪
