Centre For Multiparty Democracy

Centre For Multiparty Democracy The CMD is a body founded by political parties in Kenya, who are also its members, and registered as a trust early 2004.

Its basic quest is to work with political parties in terms of capacity building. Kenya has a fluid political party landscape within a very open political environment for discussions about reforms. Political parties, however, are challenged to re-invent themselves from the current overly personality oriented parties to become more programmatic oriented parties. Out of cognition of these needs, the parties in CMD came together for a substantial dialogue of this kind.

The Center for Multiparty Democracy-Kenya with support from FCDO through ELGIA held a meeting with Wiper leadership to secure commitment to adopt the consultative manifesto creation and policy making framework as part of Phase 2 of the Kenya Institutional Strengthening Programme (KISP 2)

This is about shifting power back to the people. KISP Phase 2 seeks to place Citizen voices at the heart of policy making which ensures that the most pressing issues affecting mwananchi are reflected in party manifestos and policy positions not just campaign slogans.

A shift in Kenya’s political and campaign culture toward issue-based politics, increased accountability and policies that are responsive to citizen needs.

CMD-Kenya remains committed to strengthening political parties and democratic institutions for more inclusive and responsive governance

πŸ’‘ Communities should never be viewed simply as respondents in research - they are partners in shaping the solutions to the challenges they face. 🀝 At CMD Kenya, we believe that meaningful citizen participation extends beyond dialogue spaces to the way we generate evidence, design programmes, and inform policy. πŸ“– When communities are actively involved in these processes, the outcomes are not only more relevant but also more sustainable.

🌍 That is why we are delighted to join our partner Busara for the launch of their Participatory Action Research (PAR) Guidebook on πŸ“… 10th August 2026. The webinar will explore how Participatory Action Research strengthens citizen engagement by bringing together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and communities to collaboratively understand local challenges and co-create solutions grounded in lived realities.

πŸ‘₯ Whether you work in research, governance, civil society, public policy, programme implementation, or community engagement, we invite you to join this important conversation.

Earlier, with support from the British High Commission through ELGIA, CMD Kenya convened the Policy Unit of the Linda Mwananchi Movement for a structured working session to advance the development of a citizen-centred political platform.πŸ“‹

Through the Kenya Institutional Strengthening Programme (KISP), CMD Kenya is supporting political parties and formations to strengthen internal policy development processes by ensuring that citizen priorities, evidence and dialogue inform party platforms and, ultimately, their 2027 General Election manifestos.πŸ’‘

At CMD Kenya, we believe that stronger democracies are built when political ideas are grounded in the lived realities and aspirations of citizens. πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ🀝

Today, CMD-Kenya convened a Pre-Election Dialogue Forum in Kilifi County bringing together citizens and aspirants to shape the 2027 conversation from the ground up.

The goal being to move beyond campaigns and speeches, and into real solutions.

What happened:
1. Citizens outlined key community issues - Cost of living, youth unemployment, healthcare access, water, education, and county service delivery
2. Aspirants responded with policy propositions - Workable, issue-based commitments to address what matters most to mwananchi
3. We built consensus on the need for leadership that governs with evidence and accountability

This is what democracy should look like: Citizens setting the agenda. Leaders competing on ideas. Policy rooted in lived realities.

At CMD-Kenya, we believe pre-election dialogues are how we ensure the next county government is elected on issues, not handouts.
