The "Ivory Queen". The woman behind the smuggling of ivory from Tanzania was recently arrested. The number of elephants, rhinos and lions is fast dwindling and could be wiped out in our generation if left unchecked. In certain Countries the drug-smugglers face certain death when caught no matter the amount found in your possession. We need to make it a capital offence for those caught dealing in ivory. The punishment for poaching should be life in prison for the offender.
Our children shouldn't be left to experience elephants, rhinos and lions through documentaries and pictures. We can save these majestic creatures for posterity. In Uganda for instance, studies show that one lion alone generates over 100,000 USD a year through tourism. With a population estimated to be about 400, that means Uganda gets in region of 40m USD in foreign exchange if the statistics are anything to go by.

THIS HAPPENS ONLY IN THE MASAI MARA NATIONAL PARK
This is the shocking moment an angry elephant impaled a buffalo with its tusks, tossing it high in the air, before shaking it to death.
The unsuspecting buffalo had been snoozing under a tree in Maasai Mara, Kenya, when a female elephant surprised him and he charged at her.
After the buffalo headbutted the elephant, she retaliated by digging her tusks into the creature and tossing the buffalo into the air with full force.
The buffalo did not die immediately and rangers at the reserve think the animal must have been unwell to act so out of character.
The extraordinary scene was captured by amateur photographer Kimberly Maurer, 56, who was on holiday at the game reserve.
The 56-year-old said: 'I started looking through the images on the back of my camera immediately after the attack and became very excited to discover that I had actually captured the event in detail.
'This photograph was, no doubt, a once-in-a-lifetime capture for me. As you would imagine, his carcass was a meal for another animal or two.'

Now is the best time to visit Masai Mara Game Reserve - between July and October when the wildebeest and zebra are at their highest number and offer plenty of food for lions, cheetahs, and leopards.

Tourists have started arriving at the world famous Masai Mara Game Reserve ahead of the spectacular wildebeest migration. More than 100 tourists have checked in at the Sarova Mara to witness the migration of hundreds of wildebeests from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Kenya. The Standard on Saturday sought to know from the tourists why they had ignored the travel advisories that were recently issued by the US and UK. Phill Nordstrom from USA said they have enjoyed their stay and have seen nothing of great concern, and urged fellow countrymen to continue visiting Kenya.

MIGRATION UPDATE

The herds begin to migrate west and north to grassier plains and the woodlands of the Serengeti Western Corridor. The rain can, at times, make it quite tricky to follow the herds during this stage of the migration. This being said, it is an incredible time to be on safari. It is wet, quiet and in essence you may experience the migration and have the Serengeti to yourself.

There exists a spectacular interaction following the new arrivals of ungulate new-borns and eager awaiting predators and their cubs. A range of predators take advantage of the weak and vulnerable foals. The wildebeest herds are constantly on the move and calving does not disturb this rhythm in the slightest. Upon delivery and within minutes, calves are able to stand and walk with the herd, and in a few days are even able to outrun predators.

The flowers on the plains during this period and the dust-free photography make it the perfect time for any passionate naturalist to visit. May marks the end of long rains in the Eastern Serengeti and Northern Ngorongoro, and as the rain stops, the wildebeest and other ungulates gradually move north. Come May the calves have matured and it’s migration time; scattered herds gather and the march westwards begins.

Individual groups begin to congregate and form larger herds and mating season begins. The Western Serengeti is the best place, during this time, to watch the migration unfold.
