KETRB–MUT Engagement on Engineering Technology Education

Yesterday, we had a productive engagement at Murang’a University of Technology with KETRB Registrar/CEO Florence Kigo, accompanied by Isaac K. Mwaura (Partnerships & Professional Development)and Amos Mucemi (Registration, Licensing & Compliance). The MUT team was represented by Prof. Prisca Tuitoek, DVC-ARSA, and Prof. Eng. Christopher Maina Muriithi, Director RIC.

Our discussions focused on the growth and future of Engineering Technology education in Kenya and the need to ensure that expansion is matched by quality, professional recognition,and clear career progression pathways.

We reflected on Kenya’s expanding technical education landscape, including the 33 National Polytechnics, while also noting that STEM-related programmes continue to attract relatively fewer students compared with several other programmes in universities, as reflected in the recent KUCCPS placement cycle. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity to strengthen awareness, attractiveness ,and positioning of STEM and Engineering Technology pathways.

Other key areas of discussion included the distinction between Engineering, Engineering Technology and Engineering Science; career progression guidelines; the Sydney Accord and engagement with EBK; curriculum development guidelines; MTech versus MSc pathways; professional examination pass rates; registration and licensing; and retooling graduates through CPD.

We also reflected on the changing international footprint within Kenya’s engineering and technical training ecosystem.

KETRB appreciated MUT’s continued support, and we agreed on the importance of strengthening collaboration between the University, regulator a,d profession.

Ultimately, the question is: How do we make Engineering Technology an attractive, well-understood,and professionally recognised pathway—from training → registration → professional practice → lifelong development?
