BATUK MUST LEAVE KENYA NOW
The British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) has no justification for maintaining a military presence on Kenyan soil. BATUK must withdraw from Kenya immediately.
Its departure, however, does not absolve it of responsibility. Before, during, and after withdrawal, the British government and BATUK must fulfil the following obligations:
1. End impunity now. British soldiers must be subject to Kenyan jurisdiction and face trial in Kenyan courts for crimes committed on Kenyan soil.
2. Face justice for past crimes. Establish a full, independent investigation into all historical offences linked to BATUK. Hold all perpetrators accountable. No exceptions. No cover ups.
3. Pay full compensation. Provide immediate and adequate reparations to all victims and families affected by BATUK related crimes and abuses.
4. Declassify the truth. Release all records relating to crimes, abuses, deaths, injuries, environmental damage, and misconduct connected to BATUK operations in Kenya.
5. Acknowledge and support abandoned children. British soldiers who fathered children in Kenya must formally recognise paternity and guarantee child support and all associated rights.
6. Repair environmental damage. Conduct a comprehensive environmental audit of all BATUK training grounds, compensate affected communities, and restore damaged ecosystems.
7. Protect Kenyan workers. Review and overhaul conditions for all Kenyans employed by BATUK. Guarantee fair pay, safe working conditions, and compensation for injuries sustained during military exercises.
8. Make all agreements public. Subject all Defence Cooperation Agreements and military arrangements between Kenya and Britain to full public scrutiny and parliamentary oversight.
BATUK must leave Kenya. Accountability must remain. Justice cannot be negotiated. Justice cannot be delayed. Justice cannot wait.
