Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with St John Ambulance Kenya, establishing a strategic partnership to strengthen occupational safety, emergency response and health preparedness across Kenya's manufacturing sector. Present at the signing was KAM Chief Executive, Tobias Alando and St. John Ambulance Kenya CEO, Mr. Paul Ngugi.

This collaboration provides a platform for KAM members to strengthen existing safety systems, stay ahead of Occupational Safety and Health Act requirements, and embed best practice more consistently across the sector.

Under the MOU, KAM and St. John Ambulance will collaborate across four key areas:
▪️Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)
▪️Provision of emergency medical services
▪️Development and implementation of workplace emergency preparedness programmes, safety assessments, evacuation plans, and industrial safety protocols.
▪️Collaboration on workplace safety research and industry best practices

Through this partnership, KAM and St. John Ambulance Kenya cement their shared commitment to ensuring that every factory floor, industrial site, and manufacturing community is equipped to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies, because a safe workforce is the foundation of a thriving industry.

Energy costs remain a significant operational expense for local manufacturers. As such, as an Association, we continuously champion the adoption of a culture of energy efficiency and conservation within the manufacturing and services sectors - not only to optimize operational costs but also reduce carbon emissions, improve profitability and increase resilience against rising energy prices and supply disruptions.

Through our annual Energy Management Awards (EMA), we recognize and award enterprises that have achieved outstanding energy savings and cost reductions through improved utilization of energy.

Last week, we conducted a benchmark visit to Mombasa Cement Athi River plant - the overall winners of this year's EMA; the 22nd Edition. Through the visits, we seek to provide a platform for learning and knowledge exchange on best practices in energy management amongst our Members.

Theirs is a journey of resilience in energy efficiency that began in 2011. Over the years, they have adopted various sustainable practices in their operations that have significantly lowered their energy costs. Some of these practices include:

✅ Installation of local capacitors across motors to supply reactive power locally to the motors instead of drawing it all the way from motor control centers, ultimately resulting in improved power factor and reduced reactive power drawn from the grid.
✅ Truck loader modification through installation of a reduced gear box with lower rated motor of 2.2 kw, leading to enhanced reliability.
✅ Modification of fan ducts to improve natural draught, leading to a significant reduction in power consumption and stress relief of for the power cables.
✅ Voltage optimization in transformers for mill and packaging auxiliaries, leading to minimal copper losses.
✅ Installation of digital light timer switches to eliminate human error and increase reliability of lights.
✅ Installation of Variable Frequency Drive (VFDs) on dust collector fans, leading to significant energy savings and better process control.

✅ Installation of energy efficient motors, leading to reduced running losses and long-term cost savings.

Through continuous improvement, they have made significant progress in their energy management journey – realizing greater savings, thereby enhancing their competitiveness.

As we continue to champion energy efficiency in the local manufacturing sector, we look forward to having many more companies participate in the subsequent Energy Management Awards editions.

The KAM Salt Sub-sector has today engaged the Principal Secretary, State Department for Mining, Mr. Harry Kimtai, following the recent Court of Appeal ruling classifying sea salt as a mineral under the Mining Act, 2016. The meeting was attended by KAM Chief Executive Tobias Alando, KAM Salt Sub-sector Chairperson Hasmita Patel, and representatives of salt manufacturing companies across the country.

The engagement follows the Court of Appeal's judgment, which classified sea salt as a construction and industrial mineral. As a result, salt extraction activities now fall under the regulatory framework of the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, with manufacturers required to pay royalties at the prescribed rate of 1.6% of the gross value of the extracted mineral. The ruling marks a significant shift in the regulation of the salt industry and necessitates the sector's transition to compliance with the Mining Act, 2016.

The meeting provided a platform for government and industry to discuss the implementation of the ruling and agree on a structured transition process. Discussions focused on onboarding the salt sub-sector into the Mining Act regulatory framework, developing a roadmap for the transition, including the formulation of supporting regulations, clarifying the implementation framework for royalties and other fiscal obligations, and defining the roles of the various government agencies involved in regulating the sector.

The Principal Secretary expressed the State Department for Mining's commitment to supporting the industry's transition and ensuring a coordinated implementation process. As a next step, a multi-sectoral transition team will be established to guide the implementation of the Court of Appeal ruling, sensitize industry players on the new regulatory requirements, and facilitate the sector's seamless transition to the Mining Act framework.

KAM remains committed to advocating for a predictable and enabling regulatory environment for the salt sub-sector and will continue to engage with Government and industry stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition to the Mining Act framework while safeguarding the sector's competitiveness and sustainability.
