Yesterday, our Head of Development Cooperation, Maren Kneller, witnessed a top-up of EUR 9 million for the Drought Resilience Programme in Northern Kenya, bringing the programme’s total funding to EUR 30 million.

The programme supports drought resilience through improved water access, climate-resilient infrastructure and stronger livelihoods in Turkana and Marsabit Counties.

Highlighting the programme’s impact, Ms. Kneller noted, “The programme is a big success. We have already reached 340,000 people. Access to safe drinking water and food security have been improved, and we even see positive effects on water-related conflicts. The effects of El Niño are being felt by the people in Turkana and Marsabit. Therefore, the top-up comes at the right time.”

For many years, German development cooperation through GIZ has supported the transformation of agricultural and food systems in Kenyan counties. In Northern Kenya, GIZ and KfW, in cooperation with IGAD, are supporting drought resilience, alongside investments in climate early-warning systems and disaster-risk financing.

German NGOs, including arche nova, Malteser International and Misereor, working together with Kenyan partners, are providing information networks, evacuation planning, sand and earth dams, and shallow wells.

Today, Ambassador Sebastian Groth co-chaired the 15th Development Partnership Forum (DPF) alongside Deputy President H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki. The high-level forum brought together senior Kenyan government officials, including Prime Cabinet Secretary H.E. Musalia Mudavadi, alongside Heads of Mission, Heads of Cooperation, and representatives from the private sector and civil society to discuss Kenya’s development priorities and future cooperation particularly on youth.

In his speech, Ambassador Sebastian Groth focused on strengthening Kenya’s path towards greater self-reliance, mobilising domestic resources, creating an enabling environment for private investment, and ensuring that development partnerships deliver sustainable and lasting impact.

The GIZ Civil Peace Service (CPS) Sector Group Meeting brought together CPS partners, the CPS Consortium and other peacebuilding actors to foster dialogue, share perspectives and strengthen cooperation towards 2027 and beyond.

Our Deputy Ambassador, Konrad Lax, graced the event and joined discussions on peacebuilding priorities and partnerships, including the links between our work and the new reform plan of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The exchange focused on peace and stability, inclusive partnerships, the role of civil society, responding to vulnerability and preparations for the 2027 elections.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of modernising approaches and strengthening collective action to address emerging challenges and maximise the impact of peacebuilding efforts. Sustainable peace is built through dialogue, trust and strong partnerships.

Think you know how big Africa is? Your world map may have misled you.

The United Nations​ General Assembly has backed the African-led “Correct the Map” initiative, encouraging the use of equal-area maps, including the Equal Earth projection, when representing the relative size of continents.

Germany was among the 164 countries that voted in favour of the resolution.

Why does that matter?

Many of the world maps we are most familiar with distort land area, making regions closer to the poles appear disproportionately large. Equal-area projections offer a more accurate picture of the relative size of continents, including Africa.

The initiative is about more than cartography. It is about representation, visibility, and seeing our world in its true proportions.

This year marks 35 years of the Weimar Triangle, a partnership between Germany, France and Poland that brings the three countries together to strengthen cooperation and dialogue on European and international issues.

To mark the occasion, the Deputy Heads of Mission from the three countries swapped diplomacy for breakfast, sharing some of their favourite dishes with Kenyan alumni who have studied, worked or lived in Germany, France and Poland. Because sometimes, the best way to build bridges is over good food!

Today marks the closing of the first Pan-African Biennale and we congratulate Omar Degan and his team on a successful first edition.

Germany is proud to support the first Pan-African Biennale, including the publication of the PAB 2026 catalogue, which brings together the ideas, projects and voices shaping this inaugural edition. More than a record of the Biennale, the catalogue helps create a lasting space for African perspectives to define, document and represent Africa’s built environment.
