Below are some fair fighting rules intended to help couples have difficult conversations while still maintaining emotional safety:

1. Before entering the conversation, identify what you are feeling and what caused you to have that feeling.

2. Taking responsibility for your feelings by using “I” statements (i.e. I feel nervous when you raise your voice at me).

3. Do not use degrading or offensive language.

4. Be specific and concise. Discuss one issue at a time.

5. Take turns talking without interruptions.

6. Do not stonewall or shut down.

7. If necessary, take timeouts. Timeouts are necessary… BUT there is a difference between walking away and taking a timeout.

8. Be aware of your verbal and nonverbal language (i.e. no yelling or posturing with yours hand across your chest).

9. Try to negotiate or come to a compromise where both partners feel heard and validated.

There is a pretty typical pattern that follows. In the early stages of the relationship, we love how these differences complement the relationship, but rarely do these get in the way of doing life separately. Until we get married, where those same differences become obstacles in doing life together. This is when we tend to hyper-focus on these traits or preferences and wonder, why can’t they be just like me? And this is where everything falls apart. Rather than talking about it, we nag and complain and ultimately try to change our spouse through manipulative tactics.
