Koitalel connects with the Kipsigis people primarily through his family lineage, shared Talai clan heritage, and the shared consequences of British colonial oppression.
The connection can be broken down into three major historical links:
1. Family Lineage and His Brothers
Koitalel was the son of the great Nandi Orkoiyot Kimnyole arap Turukat. Before Kimnyole was killed by the Nandi following a series of bad omens and disasters, he foresaw danger for his sons. To protect them, he sent three of Koitalel’s older brothers—Kipchomber arap Koilegen, Kipngetich arap Boisio, and Kibuigut arap Sing’oei—to live safely among the Kipsigis.
2. Establishment of the Kipsigis Orkoiyiot Autocracy
After their father's death, a brief leadership dispute arose between Koitalel and his brother Kipchomber arap Koilegen. Koitalel prevailed as the supreme leader of the Nandi, while Koilegen retreated fully to Kipsigis land. There, Koilegen was embraced by the community and became the very first supreme Orkoiyot (prophet-king) of the Kipsigis people, mapping out geographic boundaries and strategies for the community. Because of this, the modern-day Kipsigis Talai clan members are direct descendants of Koitalel’s immediate family.
3. Shared Colonial Tragedies
The British colonial administration viewed the entire Talai clan (both the Nandi branch and the Kipsigis branch) as a massive threat to their rule. Following the assassination of Koitalel in 1905, the British aggressively cracked down on his brothers and their families among the Kipsigis:
Deportation of Leaders: In 1914, Koitalel's brothers (including Koilegen and Boisio) were arrested by the British and exiled to Central Kenya, where Koilegen later died.
The Laibon Removal Ordinance: In 1934, the British passed a punitive law to completely purge the prophet bloodline. They rounded up the entire Kipsigis Talai clan (Koitalel's extended family) and forcefully marched them to the malaria-infested Lambwe Valley in Nyanza.
