Social Health Authority

Social Health Authority National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a State Parastatal that was established in 1966 as a department under the Ministry of Health.

The Social Health Authority (SHA) facilitates healthcare services from enlisted providers by pooling contributions, ensuring the equitable distribution of quality healthcare. The original Act of Parliament that set up this Fund in 1966 has over the years been reviewed to accommodate the changing healthcare needs of the Kenyan population, employment and restructuring in the health sector. Currently

an NHIF Act No 9 of 1998 governs the Fund. The transformation of NHIF from a department of the Ministry of Health to a state of corporation was aimed at improving effectiveness and efficiency. The Fund's core mandate is to provide medical insurance cover to all its members and their declared dependants (spouse and children). The NHIF membership is open to all Kenyans who have attained the age of 18 years and years and have a monthly income of more than Ksh 1000. NHIF has 31 fully autonomous branches across the country. Each of these branches offers all NHIF services including payment of benefits to hospitals or members or employers. Smaller satellite offices and service points in district hospitals also serve these branches.

Kenyans have always known how to come together when there is a problem to solve. Healthcare is no different.

In this continuation of our SHA Leadership Series, our CEO, Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, reflects on SHA as a modern-day Harambee, Kenyans pooling resources together so that when illness comes, no one has to carry the health and financial burden alone.

The call is to contribute to the Harambee and build a system that protects each of us when we need it.

Dialysis is life-sustaining care.

Through SHA, Calvin is receiving the treatment he needs without carrying the full financial burden alone.

This is what healthcare reform looks like when it reaches a real person.

For two days, the Kenya Health Summit 2026 brought together the people shaping Kenya’s healthcare system to reflect on the progress made, confront the challenges that remain and chart the next phase of Universal Health Coverage.

At the SHA booth, the conversations moved beyond policies and statistics. Kenyans came with questions, experiences and concerns. We listened, responded and demonstrated how SHA is expanding access to healthcare and protecting families from the full financial burden of illness.

Activities ranged from plenary and town hall discussions to stakeholder engagements and conversations at our pavilion; and in all this, one message remained clear: healthcare reform must ultimately be felt in people’s lives.

The Summit may have concluded, but the work continues; in every county, every healthcare facility and every Kenyan reached through SHA.

Here are some of the moments that defined our Kenya Health Summit 2026 experience.

Day Two at the Kenya Health Summit 2026: SHA Listening, Learning and Responding

The SHA booth has become one of the summit’s busiest touchpoints, with Kenyans streaming throughout the day to seek answers, raise concerns, share experiences and, in many cases, applaud the progress made so far.

The questions span the full SHA journey from registration and contributions to benefits, claims, member accounts, healthcare access, facility-related concerns and how to get the most out of the new system.

But beyond the questions is something even more valuable, direct feedback from Kenyans.

As SHA edges closer to its second year, these conversations provide a timely reality check, and fresh motivation to keep putting members at the centre of healthcare reform.

To every Kenyan and stakeholder who has stopped by, asked a question, offered a suggestion or shared a word of encouragement, asanteni.
