Nacada Kenya National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) NACADA was established by an Act of Parliament on 24th July, 2012.

This is the official page of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse- NACADA. Its main focus is on demand reduction, which involves providing preventive education, public awareness, life skills, treatment, rehabilitation and psycho-social support to the general public. It also contributes towards supply suppression through policy formulation and capacity bui

lding. Its vision is to see a nation free from the negative effects of alcohol and drug abuse in Kenya.

ADDICTION AS A FAMILY DISEASE: OUR LAIKIPIA TEAM SENSITIZES FAMILIES AT RECOVERY TRAILS. 🧡🏥

Our Laikipia County Office conducted a sensitization session on "Addiction as a Family Disease" at Recovery Trails Rehabilitation Centre during the Family Visit Day.

The session highlighted the effects of substance use disorders on individuals and families. We discussed how addiction impacts not only the person struggling with substance use but also their loved ones, creating cycles of stress, conflict, and emotional pain within families.

We emphasized the importance of family support in the recovery journey, early intervention to prevent escalation, and seeking professional help for both the individual and the family system. Families play a critical role in encouraging treatment, providing emotional support, and creating an environment conducive to lasting recovery.

Participants were also sensitized on our 1192 toll-free helpline for counselling, information, and referral services related to substance use disorders.

We are grateful to Recovery Trails Rehabilitation Centre for the invitation and to the families for their active participation and commitment to supporting their loved ones.

JOINING THE JAMII IMARA MASHINANI FORUM IN NYERI TO ADDRESS DRUG AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE. 🧡🏛️

Our Nyeri County Office participated in a public awareness and sensitization forum at the Nyeri National Polytechnic Hall under the umbrella of the Jamii Imara Mashinani forum. The initiative seeks to take government services, information, and feedback directly to the grassroots, enhancing transparency, accountability, and public participation .

The event was graced by Ms. Mary Muthoni, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, and H.E. Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga, Governor of Nyeri County, among other national and county leaders. The Jamii Imara Mashinani platform demonstrates a government that listens and engages with the people, building trust between the people and the state .

During the forum, the Governor appreciated NACADA for its continued partnership in prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. He called for the establishment of a female responsive rehabilitation centre, recognizing the need for gender-sensitive approaches to addiction recovery.

We remain committed to working with county governments and national leaders to strengthen prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services across Kenya.

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE: EMBU COUNTY OFFICE AWARDS ESSAY COMPETITION WINNER. 🧡📝

This morning, our Embu County Office awarded the Essay Competition County Winner at Don Bosco Senior School.

Recognition certificates were presented to the other students, the supervising teachers, and the school for participating in the competition. The competition provided a valuable platform for students to share their voices on substance use prevention and contribute to the campaign for a healthier, drug-free society.

We are proud of the County Winner and all the participants for their dedication, critical thinking, and commitment to positive advocacy. Their essays are a testament to the power of youth in shaping a drug-free future.

We also extend our appreciation to the supervising teachers and the school administration for their support and encouragement of the students' participation.

Our Garissa County Office presented awards to the winner and participants of the essay writing competition at Sankuri Secondary School, in recognition of their participation and achievements.

The competition provided a valuable platform for students to share their voices on substance use prevention and contribute to the campaign for a healthier, drug-free society. Their essays demonstrated critical thinking, reflection, and a commitment to positive advocacy.

The awards included gift vouchers, certificates, and a commemorative plaque, presented as a gesture of appreciation for their efforts and contributions to the success of the competition.

EQUIPPING KABARAK UNIVERSITY FRESHMEN FOR A DRUG-FREE CAMPUS LIFE. 🧡🎓

Our Nakuru County Office sensitized first-year students at Kabarak University at the beginning of their orientation programme.

The session focused on substance use prevention and management, with emphasis on making informed choices, understanding the risks associated with alcohol and other drugs, and building protective factors among young people as they transition into university life. We discussed how the transition to university brings increased freedom and exposure to peer pressure, stress, and new social environments, making prevention education essential.

The session also included the dissemination of findings from the 2024 University Survey on the Status of Drug and Substance Use among University and College Students in Kenya. The survey revealed that alcohol is the most abused substance at 41.6%, followed by cannabis at 32.5%, and prescription drugs without prescription at 12.9%. We also highlighted that the two leading reasons for substance use among students are stress relief (38.3%) and peer pressure (34.8%).

Students were equipped with practical strategies for staying drug-free, including building resilience, choosing friends wisely, engaging in positive activities, and seeking help through our toll-free helpline 1192.

📢 Update: Multi-Agency Operation

Board member Benjamin Kuttoh participated in a multi-agency operation today. The team intercepted 30 jerrycans (20L each) of ethanol originating from Kakamega in Rondo.

The operation is currently based at Kaimosi Chepsonoi Police Station. The suspect's vehicle has been towed to the station for further processing. The accomplice managed to flee into the forest and is still at large.

PROMOTING WORKPLACE WELLNESS: OUR TAITA TAVETA TEAM SENSITIZES VOI WILDLIFE LODGE STAFF. 🧡🏢

Our Taita Taveta County Coordination Team conducted an Alcohol and Drug Abuse (ADA) sensitization session for staff at Voi Wildlife Lodge, with 50 participants and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Anti-narcotics Unit in attendance.

The session aimed to enhance awareness on alcohol and substance abuse, prevention, addiction, and the role of stakeholders in addressing related challenges. Participants were sensitized on our mandate, including public education and awareness, stakeholder coordination, monitoring of emerging trends, support for rehabilitation programmes, and research on substance use.

We also covered commonly abused substances and factors contributing to alcohol and drug use, such as peer pressure, curiosity, stress, easy access to substances, social media influence, and inadequate awareness. Understanding these factors is essential for effective prevention.

Addiction was also addressed, with emphasis on recognizing substance dependence, encouraging early intervention, and supporting affected individuals to seek appropriate treatment and rehabilitation services.

The training further highlighted the importance of maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, preventing substance abuse, and reporting any cases of illegal drugs.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY ACTION AGAINST DRUG ABUSE IN BAHATI. 🧡🏘️

Our Nakuru Office participated in a community engagement (Baraza) at Karunga in Bahati Sub-County, following an invitation by the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Nakuru North.

The baraza brought together community members and local leaders for an open dialogue on the challenges of alcohol and drug abuse. We sensitized the community on the harmful effects of alcohol and drug abuse, with emphasis on illicit brews, their impact on youth and community security, and the legal and regulatory requirements governing alcoholic drinks.

We discussed how illicit brews destroy health, fuel crime, and undermine community development. We also emphasized the importance of community vigilance and encouraged residents to report illicit activities to the relevant authorities or through our toll-free helpline 1192.

The engagement brought together the Nakuru North DCC, Bahati MCA, Police Commander, Assistant County Commissioners (ACCs), Nakuru County Minister for Education (CECM), Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, and other local leaders, reinforcing a coordinated approach to addressing alcohol and drug-related harms.

STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE HINDU COMMUNITY FOR ADA PREVENTION. 🧡🤝

Our Uasin-Gishu/Nandi Counties Coordination Team paid a courtesy call to Mr. Girish Khetia, Chairman, Hindu Council of Kenya – Eldoret Chapter, to strengthen stakeholder engagement and explore areas of collaboration and partnership in preventing and addressing the growing challenge of alcohol and drug abuse (ADA).

The engagement focused on key areas of mutual interest, including prevention, awareness creation, community sensitization, advocacy, and mobilization, with emphasis on strengthening the role of the Hindu community in promoting healthy, safe, and drug-free lifestyles.

We also discussed the planned capacity-building of selected members of the Hindu community as ADA Prevention Champions/Ambassadors for Change, aimed at equipping them to champion prevention initiatives, promote positive behavioural change, and support community-based efforts in addressing alcohol and drug abuse.

The capacity-building programme will be undertaken at a mutually agreed date in due course. The engagement reaffirmed our commitment to stronger community partnerships and collective action in preventing alcohol and drug abuse and promoting healthier and resilient communities.

We are grateful to Mr. Khetia and the Hindu Council for their commitment to community wellbeing and partnership.
