📣 Strengthening Political Parties’ Disability Leagues for a More Inclusive Kenya
This week, the National Disability Multiparty Caucus (NDMC), led by Chair Muthoni Kihara, gathered in Machakos with members from various political parties’ disability leagues to champion a stronger voice for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Kenya’s political landscape. Hosted and supported by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), this transformative workshop emphasized the need for meaningful and effective participation of PWDs in political processes.
ORPP Registrar Ann Nderitu officially opened the workshop with a call to action, urging us to address existing legal barriers that hinder the inclusion of PWDs in political spaces. “With the data at our disposal,” she highlighted, “we see a low number of PWDs actively enrolled in the political process. This is an issue that needs immediate attention from all stakeholders.”
In her message, NDMC Chair Muthoni Kihara also encouraged political party leadership to take a more active role in supporting disability leagues, ensuring that the voices of PWDs are not just heard but amplified. The workshop provided valuable insights, strategies, and tools that aim to empower special interest groups to drive forward the goals of disability inclusion within their parties and beyond.
We extend our gratitude to ORPP for their unwavering support in strengthening the capacity of political parties’ special interest groups. This collaboration marks an essential step towards a more inclusive Kenya where every citizen, regardless of ability, has an equal opportunity to participate in shaping the future of our nation.
Let’s continue building momentum! If you are a political leader, an advocate, or simply someone who believes in equal representation, now is the time to take action. Support disability inclusion in politics, and let’s pave the way for more PWDs to step into leadership roles.
