For our coastal communities, the conversation on e-waste is not just about what happens to old phones, computers and electronic equipment. It is about protecting our environment, safeguarding livelihoods, creating green economic opportunities and ensuring that our digital transformation is sustainable.

Join me at 2026 Africa International E-Waste Conference in Diani.

How do we make communities understand the impact of improperly disposed electronic waste? How do we communicate responsible disposal and recycling in ways that are accessible and relevant? And how can county governments, the private sector, media, development partners and communities work together to build a culture of environmental responsibility?

With the conference happening here on the Kenyan Coast, it is also an opportunity to put coastal communities at the centre of the conversation and explore how the circular economy can create green jobs, support innovation and protect the ecosystems upon which our communities and blue economy depend.

Telling our development story at Kilifi County Government

What does public communication really entail?

It is about informing, creating awareness, facilitating meaningful public participation, and ensuring that citizens have access to accurate information so they can engage with government, participate in decision-making, and hold leaders accountable, not on the basis of rumours or perceptions, but on facts.

As we enter the campaign season, a lot will be said. Propaganda will intensify, emotions will run high, and fake news and misinformation will circulate.

My appeal to the public is simple: cut through the noise and look at the facts.

Understand the different arms and levels of government. Know the mandates of county governments, Parliament and the Judiciary. Understand the roles of the President, Governor, Senator, Member of Parliament and MCA.

When you understand these mandates, you have a factual basis on which to measure performance, ask the right questions, hold leaders accountable, and make informed decisions at the ballot.

An informed citizen is an empowered citizen.
