Today, Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) convened a pre-bid meeting and site visits for the proposed Thika and Githunguri Water and Sanitation Improvement Project aimed at enhancing access to reliable water supply and improved sanitation services for Thika and Githunguri towns and its environs.

The project, supported through financing from Danida Sustainable Infrastructure Finance (DSIF) and Government of Kenya, includes the construction of the Thika 3A Dam, new water treatment plants, transmission and distribution pipelines, sewerage networks, wastewater treatment facilities, storage tanks, district metered areas (DMAs), and expansion of services to underserved communities including Kiandutu informal settlement.

The pre-bid engagement brought together prospective contractors and project stakeholders to provide clarity on the scope of works, implementation arrangements, environmental and social safeguards, operational considerations, and technical requirements of the project.

The project will also support rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, development of groundwater facilities, operational efficiency improvements, and strengthening of institutional and technical capacity for sustainable service delivery.

The pre-bid meetings and site visits are expected to equip prospective bidders with a comprehensive understanding of the project scope and site conditions to facilitate preparation of responsive bids and successful implementation of the transformative water and sanitation programme.

Today, Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) hosted an academic delegation coordinated through the Kenya Water Institute (KEWI), comprising students and faculty members from the University of Alberta, Canada, for a learning engagement on sustainable water infrastructure development and water resource management.

The delegation was received at Athi Water Plaza for a comprehensive briefing on AWWDAโ€™s mandate, strategic priorities, and transformative bulk water and sanitation infrastructure projects being implemented across the Nairobi Metropolitan region and beyond.

The engagement focused on Kenyaโ€™s efforts towards enhancing water security, climate resilience, and sustainable development through strategic investments in water harvesting, storage, treatment, and distribution infrastructure. Participants gained valuable insights into the planning, development, financing, and management of large-scale water projects, including the Karimenu II Dam Bulk Water Supply Project.

The delegation further undertook a technical learning visit to Karimenu II Dam in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, where they were exposed to practical aspects of dam infrastructure development, water conservation, and catchment sustainability interventions aimed at improving access to clean and reliable water supply.

The interaction provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, experiential learning, and strengthening collaboration between academia and the water sector. It also underscored AWWDAโ€™s commitment to nurturing future water sector professionals through capacity building, innovation, and shared learning initiatives aligned to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on clean water and sanitation.

Thursday 14th May 2026 | Kamukunji, Nairobi - Kenya.

Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) today convened a stakeholder community engagement session at California Social Hall in Eastleigh with community leaders and key stakeholders to discuss the ongoing expansion of water services and the impact the project will have on residents and businesses in Eastleigh and Kamukunji areas.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Nairobi Deputy County Commissionerโ€™s office, California Ward leadership, representatives from Eastleigh North and Kamukunji leadership, local administration, village and religious leaders, supervising contractors and project teams.

The engagement created an opportunity for stakeholders to ask questions on implementation approaches and understand how project activities may affect communities during the construction phase. The discussions also highlighted the long term value of the project and the role of continued collaboration in successful implementation.

The project will involve replacing approximately 77kilometerss of existing water pipelines, reinstating 2,192 consumer connection, and introducing 326 new consumer connections across Nairobi CBD, Central Industrial Area, Eastleigh, Ngara and Jogoo Road areas.

Community engagement remains central to project delivery and more engagements will continue to strengthen collaboration, keep stakeholders informed and ensure communities are actively involved throughout implementation.

This afternoon, Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) led by the Chief Executive Officer Eng. Joseph Kamau, joined the Principal Secretary, State Department for Water and Sanitation, Mr. Julius Korir, CBS, and the Water and Sanitation Providers Association (WASPA) Kenya, led by CEO Mr. Anthony Njaramba, Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) in a consultative meeting on the development of a National Water Loss Reduction Programme aimed at tackling Non-Revenue Water (NRW) across the sector.

Non-Revenue Water in Kenya currently stands at approximately 44%, translating to over Ksh. 10 billion lost annually, a significant revenue gap that limits investments in asset renewal, pipeline expansion, and development of additional water sources needed to meet the rising water demand in urban and peri-urban areas.

The meeting deliberated on priority interventions to address both technical losses such as leakages, bursts, and aged infrastructure, as well as commercial losses including illegal connections, meter inaccuracies, and weak billing systems. Key discussions also focused on strengthening legal and regulatory frameworks and fast-tracking the adoption of modern technologies to enhance efficiency, including advanced leak detection systems, network verification and mapping, pressure management, smart metering, and improved billing and revenue management systems.

The proposed national programme is expected to strengthen operational efficiency, enhance revenue collection, and improve financial sustainability of Water Service Providers, enabling reinvestment into critical infrastructure upgrades and accelerating development of new water projects to secure reliable supply for households, institutions, and industries.

Today, Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) joined the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, led by the Principal Secretary, State Department for Water and Sanitation, Mr. Julius Korir, CBS, during the wrap-up meeting for the Implementation Support Mission for the Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Program (KTSWSSP) and Nairobi Rivers Basin Rehabilitation Program: Sewerage Improvement Project โ€“ Phase II (NaRSIP II), implemented in partnership with the Government of Kenya and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The meeting reviewed overall implementation progress and reaffirmed the strategic importance of NaRSIP II in strengthening Nairobiโ€™s sewerage infrastructure and restoring the Nairobi Rivers Basin ecosystem. The project continues to play a critical role in reducing pollution across key rivers including the Nairobi River, Ngong, Mathare, Kiu, Riara, and Gatharaini, through expanded sewerage coverage and improved wastewater management systems.

NaRSIP II targets to increase sewerage coverage in Nairobi from 48% to 60%, serve over 400,000 residents, and enhance treatment capacity to 80 million litres per day of wastewaterโ€”thereby contributing significantly to improved public health, environmental conservation, and sustainable urban development.

The meeting noted that overall implementation progress has reached 95.6%, up from 93.2% recorded in September 2025, reflecting steady momentum towards project completion.

In addition, stakeholders also reviewed progress under the KTSWSSP, which is now 90% complete, with 32 projects already commissioned, further strengthening access to clean water and improved sanitation services across the country.
