H.E President William Samoei Ruto and Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, KICD CEO/Director, Prof. Charles Ong’ondo, jointly presented the award for the Best Special Needs Education to Koyonzo Special School during the 98th Kenya Music Festival State Concert at Bungoma State Lodge.

​By donating this trophy, KICD continues to champion inclusive education, providing a vital platform for learners with special needs to showcase their talents, build confidence and ultimately excel alongside their peers nationwide.

The presentation, held during the culmination of the national festival running from August 1 to 14, 2026, honoured a student representative from the school in celebration of their outstanding performance and dedication at Kibabii University.

It has been an incredible 14 days of KICD’s participation in the 2026 Kenya Music Festival.

KICD sponsored 18 classes, from pre-primary to Teacher Training Colleges, under the theme “Nurturing Values is My Responsibility” (Kukuza Maadili ni Wajibu Wangu). More than 100 schools presented performances highlighting values as everyone’s responsibility.

The EDU TV crew provided live coverage of the festival on Somaplay, a digital platform developed by eCitizen in partnership with KICD to digitize, preserve, showcase and monetize performances from the Kenya Music and Kenya National Drama and Film Festivals.

The Marketing and Communication team supported the festival through promotion of Somaplay and distribution of branded merchandise.

The KICD Staff Choir also delivered eight outstanding performances and emerged position one in three solo categories, showcasing the remarkable talent within the Institute.

KICD further donated trophies, while outstanding CBC-related performances and items were recognized and awarded.

KICD continues to champion Values-Based Education and the importance of performing arts in the Competency-Based Curriculum. KICD CEO/Director Prof. Charles Ong’ondo has been on the ground throughout the festival, providing leadership and representing the Institute.
