What a weekend! Delighted to be in the presence of my predecessor and one who acted for both of us, taking in some cricket at Kensington Oval.

Cricket means something very special to us in Barbados and indeed to the Caribbean region.

Over the weekend I spent some time enjoying the game that has long united our region, especially as we honour the extraordinary life and legacy of Sir Garfield Sobers, whose impact on the sport and on Barbados will never be forgotten.

Pictured: sharing a few words with The Very Reverend Dr. Jeffrey Gibson, who frequently performs the functions of Acting President; greeting Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley; and enjoying moments with family, friends, and colleagues in public service.

It is with profound sorrow that I join the people of Barbados, and indeed the world, in mourning the passing of our National Hero and cricketing legend, The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers. Sir Gary was more than a sportsman; he was the embodiment of Barbadian excellence, resilience, and grace. His genius on the cricket field brought glory to our nation and inspired generations across the globe, while his humility and humanity off the field reflected the very best of who we are as a people.

As President, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who cherished him. His legacy is etched not only in the record books of cricket, but in the very spirit of our nation. Barbados has lost a son of incomparable stature, yet we remain forever enriched by the gift of his life and the example he set.

May we honour his memory by striving for greatness in our own pursuits, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.

He will forever be the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen.

Sir Garfield Sobers
A legend and a hero.
Well played!

My thoughts are with the people of Venezuela, as you come to terms with this unfortunate catastrophic event, as you mourn and as you rebuild.

Today, let us take a moment to pause and lift our neighbours in prayer.

Being a father is a journey, but it is a journey that once we stay committed, even for the long haul, leads to a destination of joy, of love, and of pride.

Today, I want to wish everyone on this journey

I was deeply honoured to receive the Inter-American Defense Grand Medal from the Inter-American Defense College (IADC) during a recent visit to the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C.

For me, this recognition carries special meaning because of my longstanding relationship with the College, as a student, as a Defence Attaché, and as someone who has witnessed firsthand the important role it continues to play in shaping leaders across our hemisphere.

I was also honoured to speak at the Graduation Ceremony for the 65th cohort where I reiterated the importance of the College. One of the College’s greatest strengths is its ability to help leaders see the connections between these challenges. Security, after all, is about far more than the absence of conflict. “Security is the presence of justice, of opportunity, of resilience.”

For small states such as Barbados, institutions like the IADC remain invaluable. They provide opportunities to learn from one another, strengthen partnerships, and ensure that our voices and perspectives contribute meaningfully to the future of our region.

I accept this honour with gratitude, not only as a personal recognition, but as a reflection of Barbados’ enduring commitment to cooperation, peace, and security throughout the hemisphere. I’m also deeply appreciative of the warm welcome and the opportunity to deliver remarks.

One of the privileges of serving as Commander in Chief of the Barbados Defence Force is the opportunity to spend time with the dedicated men and women who serve our country with professionalism and pride.

I was pleased to welcome Chief of Staff, Brigadier The Honourable Carlos Lovell, along with members of the Command and Officers' Corps, to State House to recommence what used to be an annual cocktail gathering.

While this event is rooted in tradition, it is also an opportunity to connect beyond official duties, to share conversation, strengthen relationships, and reaffirm our shared commitment to Barbados and its people.

The strength of any institution lies not only in its structure, but in the character, dedication, and sense of purpose of the people who serve within it.

A special full-circle moment, made even more meaningful by my niece, Jazmine from England.

Wanting to share a unique gift, she searched the Royal Archives in the UK, located this photograph from Queen Elizabeth II’s 1989 visit to Barbados, and secured the rights to it before presenting it to me. She later used the experience as part of a history project for her class.

The photograph captures my time serving as Equerry to Her Majesty while a Captain in the Barbados Defence Force. If you look closely, you will see me standing behind Her Majesty. Seeing it alongside a photograph of me serving today as President of Barbados is a humbling reminder of life’s unexpected journeys.

Thank you, , for this thoughtful gift and for preserving a piece of our history. 🇧🇧
