Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director, Moses Wekesa, accompanied by General Manager, Operations & Safety, Dr. Simon Peter, and General Manager, Engineering Services, Eng. Meshack Ochieng, conducted an inspection tour of ongoing aviation infrastructure projects in Garissa and Wajir aimed at enhancing air connectivity, improving operational efficiency, and unlocking economic opportunities across Northern Kenya.

At Garissa Airstrip, the team assessed the progress of major rehabilitation works, which are now nearing completion. The project includes the rehabilitation and expansion of the runway from 1,200 to 1,280 metres, construction of two taxiways, and development of a new apron, significantly improving the airstrip’s capacity to support growing air traffic and regional connectivity.

The delegation also inspected the new terminal building, whose construction is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2026.

The Garissa project exemplifies successful intergovernmental collaboration, with KAA undertaking the pavement rehabilitation works while the County Government of Garissa is spearheading the terminal development.

The team later proceeded to Wajir Airport, where preparations are underway for a major milestone in the region’s aviation development; the construction of a dedicated civilian passenger terminal that will separate civilian and military operations, enhancing passenger experience, safety, and operational efficiency.

As part of the visit, the KAA delegation held discussions with Wajir East MP Hon. Mohamed Aden Daudi ahead of the anticipated groundbreaking ceremony for the new terminal project. The ceremony is expected to be presided over by President William Ruto during the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations set to be held in Wajir County, marking a significant step towards modernizing aviation infrastructure and strengthening connectivity in Northern Kenya.

Eldoret International Airport this week reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening aviation security by hosting a MANPADS Mitigation Training from 18th to 22nd May 2026, further demonstrating Kenya Airports Authority’s proactive approach to safeguarding civil aviation operations.

The specialised training brought together 27 participants drawn from 12 Government Security Agencies, reflecting the strength and importance of a coordinated multi‑agency approach in addressing modern aviation security threats. The diverse representation reinforced the recognition that effective mitigation of evolving risks requires intelligence‑led collaboration, shared responsibility, and seamless inter‑agency coordination.

The programme was conducted by the National MANPADS Mitigation Steering Committee, a sub‑committee of the National Civil Aviation Security Committee, and focused on mitigating risks posed by Man‑Portable Air Defence Systems and other stand‑off weapons attacks targeting civil aviation.

The training was officially opened by the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner, Dr Eddyson Nyale, who emphasised the need for sustained preparedness, continuous capacity building, and strong inter‑agency cooperation in the protection of critical national infrastructure. The event was hosted under the leadership of Ms Angela Tilitei, KAA's Regional Airport Manager in charge of the North Rift Region and Eldoret International Airport.

Over the five day engagement, participants were taken through strategic aviation security frameworks, threat and vulnerability assessment methodologies, and coordinated response mechanisms aimed at strengthening prevention, detection, response, and recovery capabilities. The training underscored the critical role of preparedness and collaboration in ensuring the safety, security, and resilience of civil aviation operations.

Kenya Airports Authority hosted a distinguished farewell dinner last evening in honour of the Authority’s outgoing Board Members as they concluded their three-year term of service.

The event brought together the KAA Board, Senior Management led by Managing Director Moses Wekesa, and a section of key stakeholders. It was graced by the Principal Secretary, State department for Aviation and Aerospace development, Teresia Mbaika-CBS.

The occasion served as a fitting tribute to a Board whose stewardship has marked significant milestones in KAA’s journey, strengthening governance, guiding strategic growth, and advancing Kenya’s aviation sector.

Kenya Airports Authority today reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the modernization of aviation infrastructure in the country following the signing of an Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement (IPA) between the Ministry of Roads and Transport and the County Government of Narok for the upgrade and development of Maasai Mara Airport.

KAA MD, Moses Wekesa, represented the Authority during the signing ceremony, which was graced by Cabinet Secretary Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, Principal Secretary, State department for Aviation and Aerospace development, Teresia Mbaika-CBS, and Narok County Governor, H.E. Patrick Ole Ntutu.

The agreement paves the way for cooperation in the ongoing construction, upgrade, and long-term maintenance of facilities at Maasai Mara Airport, in a move expected to significantly enhance regional air connectivity and strengthen tourism access to the world-renowned Maasai Mara ecosystem.

As part of the project, the airport will undergo major infrastructure improvements including the development of a 1.5-kilometre runway, two taxiways, a terminal building, fencing, and supporting amenities aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, safety, and passenger experience for both commercial and charter operations.

The agreement, which was reviewed and cleared by the Office of the Attorney General, establishes clear implementation timelines, funding arrangements, and compliance frameworks, while also providing for environmental safeguards and community engagement throughout the project lifecycle.

Once completed, the upgraded airport is expected to improve accessibility to the Maasai Mara, support tourism growth, create employment opportunities for local communities, and facilitate faster and more reliable movement of passengers and goods.

Among the distinguished leaders received were H.E. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda; H.E. Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, President of the Republic of Chad; H.E. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia; H.E. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt; H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; H.E.
