The Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eng. Mugaa Murithi Eric accompanied with the Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation, today chaired the monthly Mwache Dam Stakeholder Management Meeting in Kwale County.

The meeting brought together Ministry leadership, the County Commissioner, County Government officials, the National Lands Commission, the Ministry of Education, the Project Management Unit and members of the Community Liaison Committee.

Key discussions focused on the overall progress of the Mwache Dam project, the status of compensation for Project Affected Persons (PAPs), and the implementation of Livelihood Restoration Programmes aimed at supporting communities affected by the project.

The meeting also provided an important platform for stakeholders to review outstanding matters, strengthen coordination and agree on interventions to ensure that community concerns are addressed as the project progresses.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining close engagement with the affected communities and all stakeholders to ensure the Mwache Dam project is implemented successfully while safeguarding the social and economic interests of the host communities.

The Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eng. Mugaa Murithi Eric accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation,Julius Korir, CBS this morning undertook an inspection visit to the Mwache Dam Main Dam site in Fulugani, Kwale County, ahead of the monthly Mwache Dam stakeholder engagement meeting.

The inspection provided an opportunity for the leadership to assess firsthand the progress of construction works, review ongoing activities at the Main Dam and receive updates from the project team on the implementation of the project.

The leadership reiterated the Ministry's commitment to ensuring that the Mwache Dam project remains on course and that the remaining works are undertaken efficiently, while upholding the required quality, safety, environmental and social standards.

The Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Julius Korir, CBS later visited the Mwache Main Dam site in Fulugani, Kwale County, to inspect the progress of construction works, which have now reached 90% completion.

The project remains on track for impounding by October 2026, marking a major milestone towards enhancing water security in the Coast region. Once completed, the dam will have a storage capacity of up to 136 million cubic metres of fresh water.

The Mwache Dam is designed to produce approximately 186,000 cubic metres of water per day, providing reliable water supply to more than 1.6 million residents in Kwale and Mombasa counties.

The Principal Secretary reiterated the Ministry's commitment to working closely with the project team and other stakeholders to ensure the remaining works are completed within the planned timelines and to the required standards.

Mwache Dam is a transformative investment that will enhance water security, support economic development and improve the quality of life for millions of residents in the Coast region.

The Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Julius Korir, CBS chaired the Mwache Dam monthly technical meeting at the Mwache Dam Administration Building in Fulugani, Kinango Constituency, Kwale County, where the Project Management Unit presented updates on the implementation of the project.

The meeting reviewed progress across key components, with the overall project completion now standing at 82.2%. The Main Dam has reached 90% completion, while the Lower Check Dam is at 88%.

The Project Management Unit also provided updates on preparations for impoundment, the implementation of Livelihood Restoration Programmes, and compliance with Environmental and Social Safeguards.

The Principal Secretary emphasised the need for sustained coordination among the project teams and stakeholders to address any outstanding issues, maintain the pace of implementation and ensure the remaining works are completed to the required standards and within the planned timelines.

The Mwache Dam remains a flagship investment in strengthening water security in the Coast region and is expected to significantly enhance reliable water supply while supporting socio-economic development in the region.

The Irrigation Amendment Bill is currently before the Departmental Committee on Blue Economy, Water and Irrigation, ahead of the Public Participation process.

The Bill seeks to merge the functions of the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) and the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority (NWHSA) and harmonise their mandates. It further proposes to expand the functions of the Authority to include water harvesting and storage, and rename it the National Irrigation and Water Storage Authority.

Members of the public are invited to submit their views and comments on the proposed amendments as part of the Public Participation process.

The Mwache Dam Project Manager, Eng Sam Alima, today chaired the routine Monthly Security Meeting held at the Project Boardroom in Fulugani Village, Kwale County.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review security matters affecting project implementation, receive updates from the security team, assess emerging risks, and agree on appropriate mitigation measures to safeguard the project, workers, communities, and ongoing activities.

The State Department for Water and Sanitation - Mwache Dam Project through the Resettlement Implementation Consultant today distributed Livelihood Restoration Plan(LRP) packages to Project Affected Persons (PAPs) who were relocated to pave the way for the project.

The initiative aims to support affected households in restoring and improving their livelihoods, strengthening household incomes, and rebuilding their lives following relocation. The LRP packages provide practical support to help PAPs engage in income-generating activities and regain or improve their previous standards of living.

Among the packages distributed were tents, sufurias, chairs, and other essential items, which will support beneficiaries in various household and economic activities.

The distribution demonstrates the Ministryโ€™s and Mwache Dam Projectโ€™s commitment to ensuring that affected families receive meaningful livelihood support and are empowered to transition into more sustainable and improved living conditions.
