Today is , celebrated under the 2026 theme, "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations".

Young people all over the world share the same aspiration: to live with dignity, access greater opportunities, and build a sustainable future.

We stand for a

She wants to finish school.
She wants to choose when she marries, and who.
She wants someone to ask her what she thinks.

Nothing about that is unusual. It is what young people want everywhere.

This International Youth Day, we are saying the quiet part out loud: the aspiration is ordinary, and the obstacles are not.

works across Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia to end FGM/C and child marriage, so that every girl gets to answer that question for herself.

HUMANS OF THE EMBASSY || SIMONE VAN DEN BROEK

Hi everyone, habari zenu nyote 👋

My name is Simone van den Broek and as of this week I am part of the Trade & Investment team at the Embassy in Nairobi. A big thank you to my new colleagues for the warm welcome and for everything they arranged before I arrived. It has made settling in much easier.

My work will focus on the trade relationship between the Netherlands and Kenya, and on supporting Dutch businesses that are already active here or looking to expand. The Netherlands is one of Kenya's largest European trading partners, so there is plenty of interesting work ahead and I am keen to get started.

What motivates me in this role is finding outcomes that work for all sides, solutions that add value for everyone at the table. To get there, I try to understand where each stakeholder is coming from and what matters to them. That is the part of the job I find most rewarding.

Outside work, I enjoy good food, our lovely dogs, hiking and reading. I am excited to be building a life here with my partner, in a city with welcoming people, incredible food and new impressions at every turn.

If you are in Nairobi and see something we could work on together, get in touch. The first Kenyan coffee is on me. ❤️

🌍 Fun Fact!

Did you know that more than 10,000 Kenyans 🇰🇪 have made the Netherlands 🇳🇱 their second home?

The Netherlands is one of Europe's most multicultural societies. About one in five residents has a foreign background, and more than half of the immigrant population comes from non-European countries. Many communities have roots in former Dutch territories such as Curaçao 🇨🇼, Suriname 🇸🇷, Aruba 🇦🇼, and the former Netherlands Antilles.

🤝 This rich cultural diversity is especially evident in cities like Amsterdam 🚲, Rotterdam 🏙️, and The Hague 🏛️, where people from different backgrounds contribute to innovation, business, education, and vibrant communities.

🇰🇪🇳🇱 To the Kenyan community in the Netherlands—what do you enjoy most about living there? Share your experience in the comments!

Hi everyone!

I am Hanne Küpers and I am spending this Kenyan winter (Dutch summer) at the Embassy to support both the economic and political team. During this time, my main focus is on coordinating the assessment of a call for proposals on private sector development and business climate enhancement in Kenya. In addition, I am supporting colleagues working on human rights, security and migration in Kenya and the broader Horn of Africa.

Back in the Netherlands, I work at the Directorate for Multilateral Organizations and Human Rights. Over the years, I have worked with various Kenyan human rights defenders and organizations. What has always struck me is the energy, creativity and dedication of Kenyan civil society - it is something that continues to inspire me in my own work. While at the Embassy, I am glad to be visiting some of the organizations with which have long-standing partnerships.

My first three weeks in Kenya 🇰🇪 have been wonderful, thanks to the warmth and hospitality of my colleagues at the Embassy, as well as the many adventures inside and outside of Nairobi. I enjoy Nairobi's buzzing music 🎶 and cinema 🎬 scene, the food culture 🍽️, and the green surroundings of the city. 🌿 My (literal) highlight was climbing Mount Kenya 🏔️ and watching the sun rise above a sea of clouds! 🌅

I look forward to the weeks ahead – from working with the economic and political team, to further exploring Nairobi and Kenya.

Last Tuesday, the Dutch delegation competing in the World School Debating Championship (WSDC) visited the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kenya for a dialogue session. This year's edition is the largest to date and the first ever hosted in East Africa.

On Thursday, the team kicked off their campaign against reigning world champions India, debating a motion on Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Kenya, with an embassy representative in attendance. It was fantastic to watch such engaged and dedicated young debaters perform so well.

We wish the team best of luck in the rounds ahead and a memorable stay in Nairobi!
