MSEA PROMOTES INCLUSIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP FOR WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES IN MURANG’A

MSEA Murang’a County Office, in partnership with TechnoServe, brought together women living with disabilities and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for an engagement forum aimed at promoting inclusive entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.

The forum provided an opportunity for the women to share their business experiences and challenges with SMEs while exploring opportunities for market linkages, business development, access to finance, mentorship, and enterprise growth.

The engagement aligns with MSEA’s mandate to mainstream gender and persons with disabilities in MSE programs while promoting access to markets and capacity building for enterprises.

SOKO FRIDAY | TURNING SKILLS INTO SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS

This , we shine the spotlight on Zilpher Audo, Chairlady of Smart Widows Support System, a Community-Based Organization (CBO) empowering widows and widowers with practical skills to create sustainable livelihoods.

What began in 2019 as a support group for widows has grown into an inspiring enterprise. After registering the group as a CBO in 2020 and later receiving entrepreneurship training in the manufacture of fireless cookers, Zilpher passed on the skills to other members, enabling them to earn an income through the business.

Today, the group manufactures fireless cookers using a combination of recycled and locally sourced materials, including blanket waste, fibre, black polythene, cotton material and modern baskets made from reeds sourced in Luanda. The group has also diversified its product range to include leather bags, caps and Ankara-inspired tote bags, creating more opportunities for members to earn an income through their skills and creativity.

The fireless cooker is an insulated food warmer designed to retain heat and allow food to continue cooking after initial heating. It can keep food warm for up to eight hours while helping households save energy and cooking time.

MSEA BARINGO LINKS COOPERATIVES TO KJET OPPORTUNITIES

MSEA Baringo Office hosted leaders from Ngorora Farmers’ Cooperative Society (FCS), Kerio Valley Integrated Cooperative Society, which deals in livestock, and Tugen Hill FCS, which deals in coffee, for a sensitization session on the Kenya Jobs and Economic Transformation (KJET) Project.

The MSEA County Lead highlighted KJET objectives, key opportunities for cooperatives and value-chain actors, and potential areas for collaboration and investment.

The leaders were also sensitized on MSEA’s mandate and the support and linkages available to Micro and Small Enterprises. The engagement builds on the strategic visit to Baringo Cha Coffee Mill, focusing on coffee value-chain development, agro-processing, technology, investment, and sustainable economic transformation.

The session marked a step towards strengthening KJET linkages and collaboration with cooperatives across Baringo County.

MSEA MIGORI ENGAGES STAKEHOLDERS ON YOUTH AND MSME OPPORTUNITIES

MSEA Migori Regional Office participated in the County Agriculture Sector Steering Committee (CASSCOM) meeting held at Florence Hotel in Migori Town.

The forum, chaired by the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Blue Economy, Mr. Lucas Mosenda, brought together national and county government departments and other stakeholders to coordinate agricultural programmes and services in the county.

The meeting featured presentations on the Financial Inclusion for Youth and MSMEs in Agriculture (FYIMA) programme, a five-year initiative targeting youth aged 18–35 by improving access to affordable finance, skills and markets across key agricultural value chains.

The forum also highlighted the Integrated Natural Resources Management Programme (INReMP), an eight-year initiative focused on ecosystem restoration, food security, climate resilience and agricultural value-chain development within the Gucha-Migori-Kuja river catchment.

MSEA presented its mandate and highlighted opportunities under the NYOTA and Kenya Jobs and Economic Transformation (KJET) projects, which support youth employability, entrepreneurship, enterprise development and growth.

MSEA BARINGO PROMOTES AGRO-PROCESSING AND MSME GROWTH

MSEA Baringo joined H.E. Governor Benjamin Cheboi, CECM Agriculture Madam Risper Chepkonga, PS ICT, and other stakeholders in hosting H.E. Kang Hyung-shik, Ambassador of the Republic of South Korea to Kenya, during a strategic visit to Baringo Cha Coffee Mill in Katimok.

The visit highlighted Baringo’s potential in agro-processing, value addition, technology, and investment, with a focus on increasing farmers’ incomes and creating employment.

MSEA used the opportunity to engage farmers and MSMEs on the importance of value addition, formalisation, and enterprise development, while encouraging them to explore KJET opportunities supporting productivity, value addition, market access, and business growth.

The engagement reaffirmed the role of partnerships in unlocking Baringo’s agricultural and MSME potential.

MSEA MOMBASA EMPOWERS YOUTH THROUGH TIDES PROGRAM

MSEA Mombasa, in partnership with CAP Youth Empowerment Institute (CAPYEI), conducted a mentorship session for youth and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Likoni Sub-County.

Participants were sensitized on market access opportunities, the KJET Project, and emerging opportunities in the tourism sector. The engagement forms part of the TIDES (Tourism Innovation, Development and Employment Skills) Project, a six-month program targeting youth aged 18–25, with a focus on digitalization, AI, sustainable practices, and domestic tourism.

The team also visited the Business Incubation Centre at Mtongwe Vocational Training Centre. 15 youth will be vetted for six months of training and certification, with outstanding participants eligible for business grants.

Through such partnerships, MSEA continues to promote entrepreneurship and enterprise growth among youth and PWDs.

MSEA BARINGO SENSITIZES ARTISANS ON FORMALIZATION AND MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

MSEA Baringo Office engaged artisans at the privately owned Cheplang Jua Kali Site, sensitizing them on the Authority’s mandate to support the growth, development and formalization of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs).

The artisans were also informed of opportunities arising from the Affordable Housing Program (AHP) and Economic Stimulus Program (ESP) markets. They were encouraged to organize and formalize their enterprises with MSEA to enhance access to business development support, market linkages and other government opportunities.

The engagement forms part of MSEA Baringo’s ongoing efforts to mobilize and formalize artisan groups across the county and position them to benefit from emerging government and market opportunities.

MSEA AND ICS PARTNER TO STRENGTHEN GOVERNANCE, MANAGEMENT AND COMPLIANCE AMONG GROUPS AND ASSOCIATIONS

MSEA Kisumu Regional Office, in partnership with the Institute of Certified Secretaries (ICS), conducted a training for leaders of groups and associations at Elle Gardens, Kisumu.

The training focused on strengthening governance, management and compliance, covering MSEA registration, proper record keeping, periodic elections, Annual General Meetings (AGMs) and KRA tax compliance.

The training brought together 23 MSMEs from 10 registered associations and representatives from two Co-operative Societies. The program was attended by MSEA and ICS officers and was graced by the ICS Chief Executive Officer, who presided over the issuance of certificates to participants.

The partnership underscores MSEA and ICS’s commitment to building the capacity of MSMEs, groups and associations to operate transparently, accountably and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
