BUILDING AN INCLUSIVE AND RESPONSIBLE DIGITAL FUTURE

ICT Authority CEO Jessy Maruti joined technology leaders, innovators and other stakeholders at the Women in STEM Africa Summit 2026 at KICC, Nairobi, for a panel discussion on building a digital ecosystem that is inclusive, responsible and responsive to the realities of its people.

The discussion highlighted the need to design technology around the realities of users, address barriers to digital participation and involve communities in shaping solutions that respond to their needs.

Panelists also explored responsible AI, data protection and the importance of adapting global governance principles to the local context.

Maruti noted that bridging the digital divide requires moving policy into implementation by expanding connectivity and digital infrastructure to underserved areas, strengthening digital skills and making digital devices more accessible and affordable.

On supporting MSMEs and emerging innovators, he emphasised the need for simple, accessible and predictable policies and processes that enable smaller businesses to access opportunities and participate in the digital economy without unnecessary bureaucracy.

The CEO also challenged Kenyan innovators to develop AI solutions that reflect the country’s own context and identity.

He further highlighted the Presidential Digital Talent Programme (PDTP), through which the ICT Authority is bringing on board 400 graduate interns every year, and invited industry and other stakeholders to partner with the Authority in nurturing the next generation of digital talent. The program has trained over 3700 interns since inception.

The discussion underscored that building an inclusive digital ecosystem is a shared responsibility, requiring government, industry, academia, innovators and communities to work together to ensure technology expands opportunity while remaining responsible and people-centred.

ICTA HOSTS NIBS STUDENTS FOR ACADEMIC VISIT

The ICT Authority (ICTA) hosted students from the Nairobi Institute of Business Studies (NIBS) for an academic visit aimed at deepening their understanding of Kenya’s digital transformation journey and exposing them to the programmes and initiatives being implemented by the Authority.

Led by Deputy Director, Information Security (Cyber Security), Philip Irode, the students were taken through ICTA’s mandate and key programmes spanning digital infrastructure, e-Government services, cybersecurity, digital skills development, innovation and electronic waste management.

Deputy Director, Communications, Galgallo Fayo, in his closing remarks took the students through various ongoing Government digital programmes, including the Digital Superhighway, Digital Hubs and connectivity initiatives. He encouraged them to take advantage of opportunities shared by ICTA through its digital platforms, particularly training programmes that equip young people with relevant digital skills, while using digital platforms responsibly and remaining mindful of their digital footprint.

As part of the visit, the students toured ICTA’s Network Operations Centre (NOC), a 24-hour facility that supports the monitoring and management of Government ICT infrastructure and digital services.

The students were also introduced to the Citizens Digital Skills Programme, which targets the training of 20 million citizens, alongside ICTA’s initiatives in innovation and responsible e-waste management.

The engagement provided an opportunity to bridge classroom learning with practical exposure to the ICT sector, while encouraging the students to position themselves to take advantage of emerging opportunities in Kenya’s growing digital economy.

The Committee, led by its Chair, Hon. John Kiarie, assessed the progress of the facilities and engaged with the implementing teams on how the Digital Hubs can be positioned to create meaningful opportunities for young people through digital skills, online work, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The tour provided an opportunity to review progress on the facilities and discuss the Digital Hubs vision as vibrant centres that go beyond basic computer access to support digital skills development, online employment, innovation, incubation and entrepreneurship.

The Digital Hubs programme is part of the Government’s efforts to expand access to digital infrastructure, skills and opportunities across the country.

The Authority remains committed to working with the Ministry and sector partners to ensure that these investments translate into tangible opportunities for Kenyans—particularly young people—enabling them to learn, work, innovate and build businesses within the digital economy.

Also accompanying the Committee were Secretary, ICT and Digital Infrastructure, Mr. Washington Okoth, as well as representatives from the Konza Technopolis, and the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).
