Discordant Couples of Kenya (DISCOK) is a non-governmental organisation that is dedicated to the prevention of new HIV infections throughout the Republic of Kenya and the management of existing cases specifically those in HIV discordant relationships. The physical, mental, social and emotional well being of the couples is at the core of all DISCOK activities. Furthermore, it is important that we b

ridge the gap between those who know their status as discordant couples and those who remain unaware. DISCOK uses a people-centred approach, based both on cumulative experience, acquired over the past eight years and engagement with other frontline groups in addressing HIV and AIDS among a special population. DISCOK’s work focuses on prevention of new HIV infections by addressing ignorance, negative attitudes and misinformation, using mass media among other strategies, to create awareness of the existence of discordant couples. This helps reduce HIV related stigma and discrimination, both of which can lead to mental health problems, such as suicidal thoughts. Support is directed to identify discordant couples by providing education on correct and consistent use of condoms, couple counselling and testing so that they make informed decisions about their lives, psychosocial support and facilitating forums to share experiences and exchange ideas in order to enhance the lives of discordant couples.
