NITA Nairobi, Sightsavers Partner to Expand Digital Skills Training for 50 Persons with Disabilities

The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) Nairobi has held a consultative meeting with representatives from Sightsavers to pave the way for the onboarding of 50 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) into digital skills training at the NITA Nairobi Cisco Academy.

The initiative seeks to expand access to quality digital and technical skills for persons with disabilities, equipping them with competencies that can enhance their employability, entrepreneurship and participation in Kenya’s growing digital economy.

The training is supported by the Mastercard Foundation, a key partner in Sightsavers’ initiatives aimed at promoting inclusion and creating opportunities for persons with disabilities in Kenya.

During the consultative meeting, NITA and Sightsavers discussed the onboarding process, training arrangements and the support required to provide the beneficiaries with an enabling and inclusive learning environment.

The partnership underscores the importance of collaboration between government, development partners and organisations working in the disability sector to bridge skills gaps and ensure that persons with disabilities have equal opportunities to acquire relevant skills.

Through the NITA Nairobi Cisco Academy, the 50 beneficiaries will have an opportunity to acquire digital competencies that can open pathways to employment, self-employment and further professional development.

The initiative reinforces NITA’s commitment to inclusive skills development and strengthening partnerships that expand access to training opportunities for underserved groups.

As Kenya accelerates its digital transformation, initiatives such as this are helping ensure that persons with disabilities are not left behind, but are equipped to actively participate and contribute to the country’s digital economy.

NITA Explores Partnership with Liberating Education Organization to Expand Skills and Employment Pathways

The National Industrial Training Authority - NITA is exploring a potential partnership with the Liberating Education Organization (LEO), a Germany-based non-profit initiative that seeks to expand access to quality university education and skills development in underserved communities.

LEO representatives were today hosted by NITA Director General, Dr. Rukia Atikiya, at her office, where the two organisations shared their mandates and explored potential areas of collaboration.

Discussions focused on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), industry linkages, flexible digital learning, entrepreneurship, emerging technologies and international partnerships, with a shared interest in strengthening pathways from learning and skills development to employment and enterprise.

The parties also explored the potential alignment of LEO's curriculum with relevant national skills development and quality assurance frameworks, including the applicable processes for curriculum review, recognition and accreditation.

The proposed collaboration could further connect learners to internships, workplace exposure, mentorship, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

As a next step, LEO will submit a detailed partnership proposal and curriculum documentation for technical review, paving the way for further discussions on a possible pilot programme and structured partnership.
