Kenya’s transition to electric mobility is creating new opportunities on the factory floor.

In Mombasa, Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA) reports over 270 electric vehicles assembled locally, including passenger vehicles, vans and three-wheelers, and 61 direct jobs created within its electric vehicle assembly line.

Getting there meant addressing a skills gap. Experienced technicians needed specialized knowledge to work with high-voltage systems, batteries and electrical diagnostics. AVA worked with its manufacturing partners to combine technical training with pilot builds and ongoing coaching, while adapting its assembly processes and safety procedures.

A Participant of the United Nations Global Compact since July 2024, AVA’s experience highlights the investment in people that helps turn cleaner technologies into local manufacturing opportunities.

Good sustainability reporting starts well before a report is written. It takes clear responsibilities, reliable data, and a team that knows what to disclose.

The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) S1 and S2 help organizations report on sustainability-related risks and opportunities, including climate risks, and explain how these could affect their business.

With Kenya’s phased adoption beginning for Public Interest Entities in January 2027, now is the time to build these capabilities. Whether your organization is preparing for mandatory reporting or getting an early start, this bootcamp offers practical guidance.

Join Global Compact Network Kenya and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) for the 𝗜𝗙𝗥𝗦 𝗦𝟭 & 𝗦𝟮 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.

A business is better prepared for growth when its decisions, relationships and day-to-day operations do not depend on one person.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 was the focus of yesterday’s fourth bootcamp under the Growth & Sustainability Accelerator for SMEs.

The session explored practical steps small and medium-sized enterprises can take to strengthen governance and prepare for disruption:

▪ Clarify who makes decisions and who is accountable.

▪ Identify business risks, assign responsibility and review them regularly.

▪ Plan for continuity and succession before a key person becomes unavailable.

▪ Prioritize environmental, social and governance issues, with clear ownership and measures of progress.

Through case studies and practical exercises, participants examined vulnerabilities in their businesses and considered how to translate the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact into everyday policies and practices.

The closing task was concrete: identify one priority sustainability issue, name the person responsible, choose a measure of progress and commit to an action within 30 days.

With two bootcamps remaining, the accelerator continues to support participants in putting these lessons into practice and preparing their businesses for long-term growth.

Joining the United Nations Global Compact is the beginning of a commitment to responsible business. An induction helps teams understand what that commitment means and how to put it into practice.

Yesterday, Global Compact Network Kenya hosted Albert Muinde, Chief Executive Officer of Altair Retro Ltd, and the company team for an induction session and the formal handover of their participation certificate.

The session introduced the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact covering human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption, and explored how these principles can guide business decisions and operations.

The team also discussed reporting expectations, available tools and resources, and opportunities to learn from peers. These conversations helped clarify how Altair Retro can engage with the Network and access support as it advances its sustainability commitments.

The engagement concluded with Judy Njino, Executive Director, Global Compact Network Kenya, presenting the participation certificate to Albert Muinde and the Altair Retro team.

Congratulations to Altair Retro Ltd on this milestone!
We look forward to working with the team as they translate their commitment into practical action and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Yesterday, Global Compact Network Kenya joined Risper Genga Ohaga, Group CEO of APA Apollo Group, and the APA team for a certificate handover and induction session to mark APA Insurance Limited’s participation in the United Nations Global Compact.

The engagement, led by Judy Njino, Executive Director, Global Compact Network Kenya, explored the role of responsible leadership in turning sustainability commitments into practical action across business operations and value chains.

APA shared its sustainability initiatives, including investments in education and efforts to expand access to microinsurance for underserved populations. The discussion also highlighted the construction of sand dams to improve water access and strengthen community resilience in water-stressed areas. These initiatives illustrated the different ways insurers can support the well-being and resilience of the communities they serve.

The induction provided an opportunity to build a shared understanding of participation and the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact covering human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. It also introduced the practical guidance, peer learning, Accelerators and local forums available to support APA in embedding these principles across its business.

APA joins a growing community of companies in Kenya and around the world committed to advancing responsible business practices and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Congratulations to the APA team on this milestone!
Global Compact Network Kenya looks forward to supporting APA as it builds on its existing initiatives, strengthens accountability and advances its contribution to Kenya’s sustainable development.
