🌳 KEMRI joined H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki at the 10th Kaptagat Forest Tree Growing Event under the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme (KICP) at Kaptarkok Primary School, Elgeyo Marakwet.

Led by Board Chair Dr. Abdullahi Ali, Directors Mr. Luka Chemwolo, Vivian Chebii and VC/CEO Prof. Elijah Songok, the KEMRI team reaffirmed its support to Kenya's national tree-growing agenda.

The event marked 10 years of the KICP, which has contributed to the planting of over 1.7 billion trees, and launched the next 10-year phase of the programme.

Also present were Ag. Deputy Director, Sports Science Research Centre, Dr. Steve Wandiga, together with Allan Kimaiyo and Barnabas Kimatoi from the Office of the Director.

🔬 Dr. Simon Kariuki is helping ensure malaria vaccines reach the children who need them most, translating research into life-saving public health impact.

🦟 Dr. Eric Ochomo is tracking invasive mosquito species that threaten to expand malaria into new areas, generating evidence to strengthen surveillance and guide control strategies.

🧬 Dr. Isabella Oyier is decoding the genetic blueprint of the malaria parasite, advancing research that will support the development of better tools for malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Together, their work reflects our commitment to advancing scientific innovation and collaborating with partners to accelerate progress towards a malaria-free future.

The SCIJOURN-K 2.0 workshop has officially begun, bringing together researchers, journalists, and science communicators to strengthen science communication and ensure research findings are translated into accurate, engaging, and impactful stories that inform policy and improve lives.

The workshop, a collaboration between KEMRI and AAS/EurekaAlert , was officially opened by, Deputy Director, Corporate Communications, Mr. Davis Mkoji, on behalf of the VC & CEO Prof. Elijah Songok. In his remarks, he underscored the critical role of science communication and the use of digital playforms in bridging the gap between research and society, ensuring scientific evidence reaches the people who need it most.

Participants were also welcomed by the SCIJOURN-K Project Principal Investigator, Dr. Patience Kiyuka, who highlighted the programme's vision of strengthening collaboration between researchers, journalists, and science communicators to advance evidence-based storytelling and amplify the impact of scientific research.

KEMRI's National Cohesion and Values Committee is participating in a capacity-building training conducted by the Directorate of National Cohesion and National Values. The training focused on strengthening the integration of the National Values and Principles of Governance as enshrined in Article 10 of the Constitution into institutional policies, programmes, and service delivery.

The session was attended by the Ag. Vice Chancellor and CEO Represented by Dr. Martin Bundi and the Chair of the Committee and Director, Strategy and Compliance, Mr. Edwin Bett, together with committee members and other participants.

The engagement reaffirmed KEMRI's commitment to promoting integrity, accountability, inclusivity, patriotism, and excellence in advancing better health through research.

The inaugural KEMRI Cross Country Marathon Run hosted by the Sports Science and Research Centre is currently underway at the Eldoret Sports Club.

The run flagged off by Dr. Martin Bundi representing the Ag. VC/CEO is bringing together staff, partners and members of the public in championing for Science and Better Health.

Alongside the run, participants are benefiting from comprehensive medical camps offering essential health services and screenings.Together, we are promoting healthier communities one step at a time.

KEMRI hosted a delegation from the African Research Excellence Fund (AREF), led by Prof. Alex Corrah and Prof. Akhere Omonkhua, to explore opportunities for strengthening research capacity and expanding collaboration.

The delegation met with KEMRI management, led by Dr. Martin Bundi on behalf of the Ag. VC/CEO, and discussed areas of mutual interest in research capacity development.

KEMRI is partnering with AREF through the Excell Malaria Programme, led by Dr. Damaris Matoke-Muhia, supporting a cohort of fellows advancing innovative African-led solutions for malaria control and elimination.

Also present were Dr. Samoel Khamadi, representing the Director of Research and Development, and Dr. Robert Onsare, representing the Director of Scientific Programmes, Partnerships and Grants Management.

KEMRI is part of an exciting new collaboration with the Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) that seeks to strengthen malaria research capacity and support the growth of emerging African research leaders.

The 2 year leadership Excell Malaria Programme will provide mentorship, leadership development, and capacity strengthening opportunities to help researchers and institutions advance innovative, locally driven solutions for malaria control and elimination.

At KEMRI, the programme is led by Dr. Damaris Matoke-Muhia, alongside a cohort of fellows comprising Dr. Paul M Gichuki, PhD, Dr. Benard Abong’o, Dr. Noah Machuki, Dr. Juliet Otieno Awori, MBChB, PhD, and Dr. Caroline Wanjiku.
