County Executive Committee Member for Education, ICT, e-Government and Public Communication, Hon. Zippy Wambui, represented H.E. Governor Susan Kihika at the Mariashoni Radio Callers fundraising event held at Kondamet Comprehensive School in Mariashoni Ward, Molo Sub-County.

Hon. Wambui conveyed the Governor's support and noted that the administration of H.E. Governor Susan Kihika remains committed to empowering initiatives that improve the livelihoods of Nakuru residents.

She commended the community for their unity, generosity, and collective spirit, noting that such partnerships are essential in driving sustainable development and improving the well-being of residents.

Every family deserves uninterrupted access to quality reproductive health services whenever they need them. To make this possible, Nakuru County has concluded a week-long countywide dissemination and planning forum aimed at strengthening the availability and management of family planning commodities across all health facilities.

The forum brought together representatives from all eleven sub-counties, the County Health Management Team and national partners to review the findings of the 2025/2026 Logistics Management Assessment (LMA). Participants identified gaps affecting the family planning supply chain and jointly developed county-specific implementation plans and accountability mechanisms to ensure essential commodities remain consistently available in health facilities.

Throughout the week, health managers, pharmacists and reproductive health teams held practical discussions on improving stock management, accountability, reporting systems and workforce capacity. The meeting also discussed on embracing a digitized Reproductive Health Supply Chain Management training package that will help strengthen commodity management and support continuous quality improvement across the county.

In her remarks when closing the workshop, the County Director Health Administration and Planning, Dr. Joy Mugambi concluded with a unified commitment by county and sub-county health teams to implement the agreed action plans, monitor progress. She also thanked the partners including the Ministry of Health, UNFPA, KEMSA and the Reproductive Health Network Kenya for the continued support in the noble cause. These efforts will help ensure that residents continue to receive timely, reliable and uninterrupted family planning services in public health facilities across Nakuru County.

Every stronger health system begins by listening to the people it serves. That commitment to citizen-centred governance continues to shape healthcare transformation in Nakuru County, where residents are playing an active role in defining the future of health service delivery.

The County Government of Nakuru today participated in the validation of the County Citizens' Manifesto on Health, a consultative forum convened by the Centre for Transformational Leadership in partnership with Uraia Trust. The engagement brought together government leaders, civil society organisations and community representatives to identify priority health issues affecting residents and explore practical solutions.

Representing the County Government, County Director for Health Administration and Planning Dr. Joy Mugambi reaffirmed the county's commitment to meaningful public participation, noting that citizen voices remain central to planning and improving healthcare services.

She highlighted the significant investments made under the leadership of H.E. Governor Susan Kihika to strengthen primary healthcare, expand health infrastructure, improve staffing, enhance preventive healthcare and increase access to affordable quality services.

Dr. Mugambi also assured residents that their priorities will continue to inform policy and planning as the County works towards a more responsive, inclusive and people-centred health system for every Nakuru resident.

Nakuru County is strengthening its climate resilience and food security agenda by integrating national and global climate commitments into local development planning, a move expected to enhance sustainable agriculture, protect livelihoods and build more resilient food systems capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change.

The commitment was reaffirmed during a Policy Dialogue and Advocacy Workshop that brought together government institutions, development partners and key stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and align Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and Food Security Frameworks with the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP). The discussions focused on deepening policy integration to advance sustainable agriculture, climate resilience and food security across the county.

Chief Officer for Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services, Dr Michael Cheruiyot, said mainstreaming climate-smart agriculture into county planning is critical to safeguarding farmers' livelihoods, improving livestock productivity and creating resilient food systems that can withstand the growing effects of climate change.

Chief Officer for Economic Planning, Dr Victor Achoka emphasized that embedding climate adaptation and food security priorities into the County Integrated Development Plan will strengthen evidence-based planning, improve resource allocation and ensure county development remains responsive to evolving environmental and socio-economic challenges.

Participants also reviewed existing county planning frameworks, identified policy and implementation gaps in climate and food systems integration, and developed practical recommendations to guide future policy implementation and strengthen coordinated action across sectors.

As Nakuru advances its climate action and agricultural transformation agenda, the outcomes of the dialogue are expected to shape future county policies, reinforce partnerships across government and development agencies, and accelerate the delivery of sustainable, inclusive and climate-resilient development that benefits communities across the county.

The workshop was convened by the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) Kenya and brought together county government officials, representatives from the national government, civil society organizations and development partners to chart a coordinated pathway towards resilient and sustainable development.

‎At a meeting held at Solai Joint Growers SHG, stakeholders deliberated on establishing an all-inclusive fresh produce market while exploring new partnership opportunities to expand market access for farmers.

‎The group has previously recorded significant milestones through collective production contracts for crops such as hot chillies and French beans in partnership with Mace Foods and Vegpro, demonstrating the benefits of organized farming and market-driven production.
‎
‎Building on this success, discussions focused on the group's intention to transition into a cooperative, a move expected to enhance its bargaining power, governance, and access to more opportunities. Members also explored strategies for ensuring continuous production of a wide variety of fresh produce to meet the demands of markets including Six Square, Extra Fresh, and other local outlets.

‎As part of preparedness measures ahead of the anticipated El Niño rains, a multi-sectoral technical team drawn from various County departments, together with residents of Visoi Ward in Rongai Sub-County, conducted an overview and mapping exercise to identify high-risk flood-prone areas and the underlying causes of persistent flooding.

‎The exercise focused on Undugu, Jamii, Nafaka, Kimangu, Kayole, and Burgei villages, which have experienced recurring flooding over the years, resulting in damage to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
‎
‎Through the assessment, the technical team and community members identified flood hotspots and discussed practical mitigation measures aimed at reducing flood risks and enhancing community resilience. The participatory approach ensured that residents shared their experiences and contributed to the development of sustainable solutions tailored to the local environment.

‎Residents welcomed the proposed mitigation measures, expressing optimism that their implementation would provide a lasting solution to the long-standing flooding challenges that have affected their homesteads for many years.

‎Household kitchen gardens are playing an increasingly important role in improving nutrition and food security. To encourage their adoption, the Department of Agriculture, through the Kenya Livestock Commercialization Project (KELCOP), conducted a SMART Households training at Kipchimchim in Solai Ward, Rongai Sub-County.
‎
‎The training is aimed to enhance practical learning, participants were taken through demonstrations on the construction of multi-storey kitchen gardens and the proper use of kitchen garden nets, technologies that enable households to maximize limited space while protecting vegetables from pests.
‎
‎Additionally, to support the establishment of home gardens, participants received assorted vegetable seeds, including spinach, kale, spider plant (sagaa), tomatoes, and amaranth (terere). The seeds will enable households to produce a variety of nutritious vegetables for home consumption and improved dietary diversity.
‎
‎Follow-up visits will be conducted to monitor the establishment of individual nursery beds and provide technical support to ensure successful adoption of the recommended practices.
‎
‎The training is part of KELCOP's ongoing efforts to promote climate-smart agriculture, improved nutrition, and resilient livelihoods among farming households in the project implementation areas.

‎Nakuru County Government continues to promote household food security and improved nutrition through farmer capacity-building initiatives. In Soin Ward, at Lomolo Sub-location, the Ward Agricultural Extension Officer (WAEO) Margaret Kariuki and the Soin Ward KELCOP Coordinator Collins Sungunya facilitated an Agri-Nutrition training for members of the Lomolo Smart Families groups.

‎The participants were taken through key topics including nutrition, food diversity, establishment of kitchen gardens, and sustainable pest management using simple, locally available botanical pesticides that farmers can easily prepare and use.

‎The training equipped households with practical knowledge on producing diverse, nutritious foods while adopting environmentally friendly farming practices that enhance productivity and reduce reliance on synthetic pesticides.

‎To reinforce the lessons, practical demonstrations are scheduled to take place in the coming weeks, allowing participants to apply the skills acquired during the training.
‎
‎The initiative is being implemented under the Kenya Livestock Commercialization Project (KELCOP), which is currently supporting farmers in four wards by promoting climate-smart agriculture, improved nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods.

‎The Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Mau Forest Complex Integrated Conservation and Livelihood Improvement Programme (MFC-ICLIP), trained 120 and 112 Environment Club teachers drawn from primary and senior schools in Njoro Sub-County and Kuresoi North Sub-county respectively.

‎The training equipped teachers with practical knowledge on Climate Smart Agriculture, Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture, the establishment and promotion of school nutrition gardens, water resources conservation, environmental conservation, and other sustainable environmental management practices.
‎
‎To complement the classroom sessions, participants also took part in a practical demonstration on avocado planting, showcasing how schools can embrace tree growing while promoting food security, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship.
‎
‎By empowering teachers with these skills, the initiative aims to inspire the next generation to become responsible environmental custodians while fostering sustainable agriculture and conservation practices within schools and communities.

The County Government of Nakuru has sensitized stakeholders on the Nakuru County Animal Welfare Act, 2021, a law championed by Governor Susan Kihika to promote animal welfare, protect animals from cruelty, and support sustainable livestock production in line with her manifesto.

Speaking during the forum in Nakuru Chief Officer Livestock and Veterinary Services Dr. Michael Cheruiyot emphasized the need for public awareness, noting that many people are still unaware of animal rights and the responsibilities of animal owners. He urged stakeholders to help educate communities on the provisions of the Act to ensure its effective implementation.

The sensitization also highlighted the rights of animals, the responsibilities of owners and handlers, and the penalties for anyone found violating the law.

Present were County Directors, the Inspector of County Enforcement, the County Assembly Legal Team, representatives from the Office of the County Attorney, Farming Systems Kenya, the Senior County Commissioner's Office, the Kenya Veterinary Board, and other stakeholders committed to promoting animal welfare in Nakuru County.
