The Great Grevy's Rally

The Great Grevy's Rally Come and join the Great Grevy's Rally! It is a great chance to explore Kenya and support the conserv In the late 1970's there were 15,000 Grevy's zebra.

Today less than 2,500 remain in the wild. The Grevy's zebra has suffered one of the most drastic population declines of any African mammal, due to climate change, habitat loss and competition with livestock. The Great Grevy's Rally is a census of the population, which will aid Grevy's Zebra Trust and their conservation partners in safeguarding the future of the Grevy's zebra. Citizen scientists wi

ll join conservationists, local community members and land owners to survey almost the entire range of Grevy Zebra habitat. Teams of citizen scientists will go out into the wilderness and with GPS enabled camera to capture the right flank of every individual Grevy's zebra observed during the two days. With this information the Gravy's Zebra Trust can identify all individuals in the population and gain vital information about the species population - information that well help Kenya save it's iconic species!

Now that the Great Grevy's Rally is over, many of you have asked.... What’s next?? The tens of thousands of photos are on their way to WildMe in the US. We are first cleaning them to remove any pictures of people or photos that were captured outside the rally days. Before they start analysis WildMe are working on the Grevy's zebra WildBook to improve how it works - the changes they are making will mean that there will be much less work for humans and the system will better be able to identify individual Grevy's zebra. By making these changes before analysing the GGR 2020 data, the final analysis will be much quicker for this GGR and future GGRs... Standby for an update directly from the WildMe lab!

The is officially over. Thank you to all who participated and all those who worked hard to make this event possible. Next step is to allow our science team to review and analyse the data to get a final estimate of the Grevy's population. It will take some time to review all the data captured this weekend but we will be sure to share the final results once we have them.
