The Dean of Students, Mohammed Aden, led the Students’ Leadership team from Maasai Mara University to the 7th East Africa Student Leaders Conference held at The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology in Arusha, Tanzania. The student leaders who represented the University included Victor Mitema (Chairperson), Pauline Njeri (Vice Chairperson), and Mohamed Ali (Secretary General).

The conference brought together student leaders from universities across East Africa to deliberate on leadership, innovation, governance, and regional collaboration in higher education. Through this engagement, Maasai Mara University strengthened its regional presence, enhanced institutional visibility, and built meaningful networks with other institutions of higher learning across the region.

The forum also provided an enriching platform for the student leaders to acquire practical leadership skills, exchange ideas and experiences, and learn best practices in student governance and representation. The insights and knowledge gained are expected to significantly strengthen student leadership, promote unity and inclusivity among students, and enhance service delivery within the University community.

As part of the ongoing Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, the Vice Chancellor of Maasai Mara University, Prof. P. Aloo-Obudho, held a meeting with Prof Slim Khalbous the CEO/Recteur Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) in Nairobi on 12th May 2026.

The discussions focused on the advancement of the French language and programmes, student mobility, collaboration with the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), academic partnerships and opportunities for student exchange among other areas of mutual interest.

The Africa Forward Summit marks a historic milestone as the first edition to be held outside a Francophone country in Africa.

Representatives from the Kenya Revenue Authority conducted a training session on taxation for university students. The session was informative and helped students understand the importance of taxes and how taxation works in Kenya.

During the training, the representatives explained the requirements needed for tax registration and demonstrated the different platforms through which registration can be done, including iTax, the USSD code 2225 #, and KRA eCitizen Portal.

The different types of taxes and the percentages deducted from income were also highlighted. In addition, the penalties and fines charged for late filing of tax returns were explained, emphasizing the importance of filing returns on time.

The representatives further discussed tax incentives available to taxpayers and introduced the KRA chatbot, which assists users in accessing tax-related information and services more easily. Lastly, they demonstrated the process of filing tax returns step by step, making it easier for students to understand.

Overall, the training was educational, interactive, and beneficial, as it equipped students with important knowledge about taxation and tax compliance in Kenya.

Students from Maasai Mara University are expanding their learning beyond the classroom through active participation in the prestigious Africa Forward Summit 2026, organized under the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), of which the university is a member.

The summit brings together diverse stakeholders from across Africa and beyond to engage in discussions on innovation, youth empowerment, artificial intelligence, sustainable development, entrepreneurship, and strengthening Africa–France partnerships.

Through this international platform, Maasai Mara University students are gaining valuable global exposure, professional networking opportunities, and practical experience that complement their academic journey and prepare them for leadership in an increasingly interconnected world.

Maasai Mara University Innovation Week 2026 concluded successfully, marking the end of an inspiring period of creativity, collaboration, and groundbreaking ideas.

The final day of the event featured innovation competitions where participants presented and defended their ideas before a panel of judges and the audience. The competition showcased the creativity, research skills, and problem-solving abilities of young innovators from various universities.

The top three innovations were recognized and awarded trophies, along with cash prizes of KSh 15,000, KSh 10,000, and KSh 5,000 for the winner, first runner-up, and second runner-up, respectively.

Students from Maasai Mara University dominated the competition, securing the top two positions, while an innovation from Kisii University earned third place.

The winning innovation overall was TerraPath Intelligence, developed by Elvis Maina, Jared George, Jamlick Lepaa, and Peter Mwei.

Second place went to Pour Point Depressants, an innovation by Louise Malova, while third place was awarded to Agrovault, an innovation by Davis Ogega of Kisii University.

This year’s Innovation Week further strengthened Maasai Mara University’s vision to promote innovation, research, and creativity, positioning the university among vibrant institutions that are progressively developing transformative ideas to address real-world challenges.

Maasai Mara University to Co-Host International EDvance Summit 2026 in Nairobi

Maasai Mara University, in partnership with the University of Bremen (Germany) and Warnborough College-UK and Ireland, will host the three-day EDvance Summit 2026 in Nairobi. from 7–9 October 2026.

The summit is a major international forum on digital education, future skills, and Africa’s workforce transformation. Bringing together policymakers, educators, researchers, and technology leaders from Africa and beyond, the conference will examine how digital transformation in education can expand access, improve learning, and create pathways to employment.

Key themes will include digital access and equity, innovation in teaching and learning, and skills development for the future of work.

Maasai Mara University was selected in recognition of its growing strength in research, environmental studies, and education. The initiative aligns with the university’s strategic goals to strengthen partnerships and collaborations, enhance institutional visibility, advance internationalization, and build networks for future research and grant opportunities.

The initiative has been organized by Prof. Beatrice Manyasi, Director of Postgraduate Studies at Maasai Mara University.

Maasai Mara University Innovation Week also featured a three-day training session led by Odoo, an open-source suite of business applications that helps organizations manage operations such as CRM, eCommerce, accounting, inventory, sales, and project management on a single platform.

During the training, students and faculty members participated in hands-on sessions covering website creation, product management, sales and order processing, and profit-and-loss analysis using the Odoo platform.

The program concluded with a competitive challenge in which students worked in groups of three to solve real-world business case studies. Among the participating teams, Team Borakazi emerged as the winner after proposing a solution to the problem of surplus milk production and low demand in Limuru. The team developed the concept of “Maziwa Bora Co-op” and used various Odoo applications to create, manage, and market the product effectively.

The winning team comprised Maitano Felistus, Peter Kimani, and Yvonne Ngina. As part of their award, they received gift packages and a fully sponsored visit to the Odoo offices in Nairobi for advanced training on the application.

This reinforces the Maasai Mara University Vision, which focuses on innovation as an integral component in empowering the community.

Safaricom Partners with Maasai Mara University in Tree-Planting Initiative

Safaricom PLC partnered with Maasai Mara University to plant trees as part of a exercise aimed at promoting environmental conservation and climate action. The initiative brought together university staff, students, Safaricom representatives, and pupils from nearby primary schools.

The university delegation was led by Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Outreach, Prof. Francis Mburu, representing Vice-Chancellor Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho, while Safaricom was represented by Mr. Simon Gathu.

As part of the initiative, Safaricom donated 5,000 tree seedlings to support efforts to increase forest cover and enhance environmental sustainability. Additional seedlings were also distributed to surrounding schools and communities.

Prof. Mburu called on stakeholders to actively support tree-planting efforts to combat climate change, while Mr. Gathu emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving long-term environmental sustainability.

The exercise reflects both institutions’ commitment to environmental conservation and aligns with Kenya’s broader agenda on forest restoration and climate resilience.
