Imagine approaching Narok from Nairobi, Nakuru, and Bomet, with all routes welcoming you with beautiful trees lining the roads, lush greenery stretching as far as the eye can see, and fresh air filling your lungs. Imagine Narok becoming a green, vibrant, and environmentally sustainable town, rivaling Nakuru and Kisumu in its beauty and perhaps setting an even greater example in environmental conservation.

This is the vision that inspired our Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho, to initiate the Greening Narok Initiative—a bold commitment to transforming Narok into a greener, healthier, and more beautiful place for present and future generations.

Today, as Maasai Mara University, through the School of Natural Resources, Environmental Studies and Agriculture, celebrates our Vice-Chancellor as a Shujaa of the Environment, we recognise her visionary leadership, commitment to environmental conservation, and dedication to creating a lasting green legacy for Narok County.

HAPPY MASHUJAA DAY, KENYA! 🇰🇪

Today, 20th October, we celebrate the heroes and heroines whose courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination helped shape the Kenya we proudly call home. They placed the nation above themselves, risking and, in many cases, losing their lives in the struggle for our freedom and independence.

As we honour the heroes and heroines of our past, we also recognise the everyday Mashujaa who continue to serve our nation selflessly. From teachers, healthcare workers, security officers, and public servants to community leaders and ordinary citizens making extraordinary contributions, their dedication continues to transform lives and build a better Kenya for generations to come.

Today, let us celebrate their courage, honour their sacrifices, and draw inspiration from their service. May we all embrace the spirit of patriotism, unity, and selflessness in our daily lives.

Literature, Theatre and Film Students Explore the Art of Animation

Students of Literature, Theatre and Film attended the ShortsShortsShots Animation Edition, organised by DOCUBOX – East African Film Fund. The event featured two key sessions: an animation masterclass and a screening of animated films, offering students valuable insights into the creative and technical aspects of animation.

The masterclass featured Olo Manal Omayer, an Art Director and Animation Lecturer, who explored how to create authentic, expressive African characters suited to animation. Joseph Raina, a co-founder and senior animator, also guided participants through the journey from being an animation student to becoming a working professional in the industry.

The afternoon session showcased animated films from Uganda, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya, exposing students to diverse storytelling styles, artistic approaches and cultural perspectives. Participants also engaged in interactive discussions with animation directors, including Kennedy Kyalo (Kenya), Louis Lubega (Uganda), Kabi Kimari (Kenya), Maria Byoma (Uganda) and Jamal Ademola (US/Nigeria). These interactions provided an opportunity to learn from industry practitioners, gain professional insights and appreciate the collaborative processes behind animation production.

Through such engagements, Maasai Mara University continues to bridge classroom learning with industry practice, equipping its Literature, Theatre and Film students with practical knowledge, creative exposure and valuable insights into the evolving film and animation industry.

MMUWEC EDUCATIONAL TRIP TO MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE

On 17th October 2026, the Maasai Mara University Wildlife and Environmental Club (MMUWEC) embarked on an educational trip to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, aimed at enhancing members’ practical understanding of wildlife conservation, biodiversity, ecosystem dynamics, and the critical role of protected areas in sustaining wildlife populations.

The visit provided members with an invaluable opportunity to bridge classroom learning with real-world experiences, explore the ecological significance of the reserve, and gain deeper insights into the importance of conserving wildlife and their natural habitats. It also fostered teamwork, knowledge sharing, and environmental awareness, reinforcing the vital role of young people in promoting sustainable conservation practices.

The Club Chairperson, Mr. Barack Peter, expressed his appreciation to the University for its support and commended all members for their active participation in making the trip a meaningful and enriching learning experience.

MMUWEC remains committed to championing wildlife conservation, promoting environmental responsibility, and inspiring meaningful youth engagement in protecting biodiversity for present and future generations.

CINEMATIC CLOSET ROUND TABLE
Students pursuing Literature, Theatre and Film at Maasai Mara University attended the 2nd Edition of the Cinematic Closet Round Table, held at the iHub Jahazi Building in Lavington, Nairobi.
The event provided an engaging platform for learners to explore the role of costume and design in theatre and film, highlighting how costume choices contribute to character development, storytelling, visual identity, and the overall production experience. This edition focused on costume and design in Tides, a production by renowned Kenyan film producer Reuben Odanga.
The students had the opportunity to interact with distinguished professionals from Kenya’s film, fashion and creative industries, gaining valuable insights into industry practices, creative processes and emerging opportunities within the sector.
The panel featured Reuben Odanga, one of Kenya’s leading film producers; Sarah Hassan, actress, producer and television host; Angela Ciruma, fashion consultant and Best Costume Designer at the 2018 African Film Festival; Dr. Susan Gatimu, Director of the Women in Film Awards (WIFA); and Ms. Charity Torut, Senior Film Industry Development Officer at the Kenya Film Commission.
The engagement offered students a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with industry practice, deepen their understanding of costume and design, and appreciate the collaborative role of creative professionals in bringing theatrical and cinematic productions to life.
Through such engagements, Maasai Mara University continues to expose its students to industry experiences that enrich their academic development and prepare them for opportunities in the creative and cultural sectors.

Maasai Mara University Represents at the Kenya Travel and Tourism Student Symposium

Maasai Mara University, through its School of Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Studies, was represented at the Kenya Travel and Tourism Student Symposium held on 15 October 2026 at Strathmore University, Nairobi. The symposium brought together tourism industry leaders, academic professionals, and student representatives to exchange ideas on the future of tourism education and the industry's development in Kenya.

The event was graced by Ms. June Chepkemei, Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Tourism Board, who served as the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker, sharing her professional journey, leadership experiences, and lessons for aspiring tourism professionals. Other distinguished speakers included Prof. David Chiawo, Dean of the School of Tourism and Hospitality at Strathmore University; Dr. Joseph Kithitu, Chairman of KATA; Dr. Moses Muraya, Head of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality at Maasai Mara University; and Ms. Mbithe Wambua, Human Resource Director at Serena Hotels.

A key highlight of the symposium was the Student Voice Panel, which brought together student leaders to articulate students' needs, aspirations, and expectations from the tourism industry. Representing Maasai Mara University, Otuba Wamalwa Isaac participated in the panel discussions, championing stronger collaboration between universities and industry stakeholders, increased internship and mentorship opportunities, practical skills development, and improved career pathways for tourism and hospitality students. The discussions provided an important platform for student leaders to contribute to conversations on preparing graduates for the demands and opportunities of the tourism sector.

The symposium provided a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange, professional networking, and engagement between academic institutions and industry leaders. Forging New Pathways in Agriculture and Innovation: Vice-Chancellor Hosts Wambugu Apple Farm Limited for High-Level Consultative Meeting on Agricultural Collaboration

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho presided over a consultative meeting with the representatives of Wambugu Apple Farm Limited, exploring a strategic partnership centred on fruit farming, agriculture, and related thematic areas.

The engagement brought together University leadership, faculty experts, and the Wambugu Apple Farm team to deliberate on key areas of mutual interest, including:

• Collaborative research in fruit crop production and post-harvest management
• Student experiential learning, internships, and field-based training
• Promotion of climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices
• Innovation, agribusiness development, and value addition
• Joint community outreach and capacity-building for local farmers

The Vice Chancellor underscored the University's commitment to building purposeful industry-academia linkages that address real-world challenges in Kenya's agricultural landscape and contribute to national food security goals.

Wambugu Apple Farm Limited a pioneer in temperate fruit farming in the region -welcomed the initiative, noting that such partnerships are vital for scaling innovation and nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders.

CALL FOR STUDENT PROPOSALS: NAMING AND DESIGNING MMARAU BOTTLED WATER

Maasai Mara University, through the Directorate of Endowment Fund and Resource Mobilisation, invites students to participate in an exciting branding initiative by proposing a unique, creative, and marketable name for the University's bottled drinking water brand.

The initiative seeks to harness student creativity and innovation as the University prepares to launch its water bottling plant. The plant aims to provide safe drinking water for internal University use and commercial distribution, contributing to the University's enterprise development and resource mobilisation efforts.

Students are encouraged to submit innovative brand names that reflect the University's identity, values, and commitment to quality. Participants may also submit a creative bottle label design to complement their proposed name.

Submission Guidelines

Propose a brand name: Submit a distinctive, memorable, and marketable name for the University's bottled water.

Submit a label design (optional): Where possible, include a sample label design that creatively represents the proposed brand.

Verify originality: Conduct a thorough search to establish that the proposed name is not already in use by another bottled water brand or product.

Observe the deadline: Submit your proposal by Friday, 16th October 2026, at 12:00 noon.

HISTORIC MOU SIGNING: Maasai Mara University and Kenya Utalii College Join Forces

Today marks a landmark milestone in Kenya's tourism and hospitality education landscape. Maasai Mara University (MMama-U) and Kenya Utalii College have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), uniting two of Kenya's most distinguished institutions under one powerful vision.

The historic signing was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho and the CEO of Kenya Utalii College, Mr. Mark Rachuonyo Ogendi. The event signals a bold new chapter for tourism, hospitality, and academic excellence in Kenya.

Council Member Ms Elizabth Ayoo challenged both institutions to think boldly and think BIG! She called for game-changing innovations to revolutionise Kenya's tourism sector. Ms Ayoo singled out Airbnb-style community-based tourism models empowering local communities to benefit directly from tourism. “

We can emulate Disney Experience in the Mara through cutting-edge research and innovation, transforming the Mara into an even more extraordinary world-class destination,” said Ms. Ayoo.
“ Through this collaboration, we can be able to transform Mmara-U’s land at Sekenani into a Centre of Excellence - a world-class hub for tourism innovation, research, and hospitality, “ said the V.C. The V.C added that the partnership is not just an agreement it is a fusion of strengths.

Mr Ogendi said, “ we must turn this MOU into a working document. This is not just a paper but a shared niche”. He emphasized that time is come to concentrate and promote practical market oriented and high employability trainings such as ones offed at Utalii college.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) today launched its club chapter at Maasai Mara University, marking a significant step towards promoting tax awareness and enhancing access to KRA services among students and the wider community.

The launch follows a KRA Tax Ambassadors training held in May this year, which equipped participants with knowledge on tax matters and the role they can play in promoting tax compliance.

The club aims to provide guidance and assistance to students and members of the wider community on various KRA services, including filing tax returns. Through the initiative, the chapter seeks to strengthen tax education, promote voluntary tax compliance, and improve public understanding of tax obligations and services offered by the Authority.

The launch was attended by KRA officials Ms Winfred Suika and Ms Chepkemoi Koskei, alongside the club's patron, Prof. Makiya Ratemo, who will support the chapter in advancing its objectives within the university and beyond.

The establishment of the KRA club chapter at Maasai Mara University underscores the importance of collaboration between higher learning institutions and public agencies in fostering tax awareness, responsible citizenship, and a culture of compliance.
