The County Assembly of Nyeri has approved the Annual Budget Estimates for the 2026/2027 Financial Year and urged the County Executive to ensure that all approved projects commence early in the financial year.
The approval follows extensive public participation on the budget estimates, during which residents and stakeholders provided their views and priorities for consideration.
The submitted budget estimates amounts to Kshs. 8,694,027,050 with an allocation of KShs. 6,024,878,664 towards the Recurrent Expenditure, while KShs. 2,669,148 has been allocated towards Development Expenditure.
In a sitting Chaired by the Speaker,Hon. James Gichuhi,the Legislators noted that timely implementation of projects will improve absorption of funds, enhance efficiency and enable Nyeri residents to benefit from improved service delivery.
In a report tabled by Hon. Erastus Karanja,the Chairperson Budget and Appropropriations Committee, the County Executive was further urged to review and update its revenue enhancement strategy, strengthen revenue enforcement mechanisms and digitize revenue collection systems with the aim of increasing own-source revenue beyond the current KShs. 800 Million target.
Additionally, the MCAs called for the implementation of measures to gradually reduce the county wage bill towards the recommended 35 percent threshold through a comprehensive staff audit and enhanced own-source revenue mobilization among others.
