Today, the Nyeri Guide and Scout City Activation and World Tourism Committee held its third meeting at the County Secretaryβs Office. The meeting was led by the CECM for Tourism, Dr. Lucy Ndumba Kiogora, together with Poppin Misoi, Executive Director WSPU.
The meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming World Tourism Day celebrations and strategies to position Nyeri as a leading destination for scouting and heritage tourism. The committee discussed the promotion and preservation of key scouting heritage sites, particularly Paxtu Cottage at the Outspan Hotel and the Lord Baden-Powell gravesite. Members emphasized the need to strengthen scouting programmes and promote the legacy of Lord Baden-Powell.
The committee also discussed improving infrastructure around memorial sites, establishing Scout brass bands, strengthening youth development programmes and building partnerships with various stakeholders.
Members noted that Nyeri can leverage its rich scouting heritage to promote scouting tourism alongside wildlife, nature and adventure tourism.
The committee further proposed tourism site visits to attractions such as the Baden-Powell gravesite, Paxtu Cottage and other attractions within the County.
Other proposed activities include town clean-up exercises, roadshows, public awareness campaigns, production of marketing posters and modernization of the scouting logo. The committee also plans to engage the Ministry responsible for ICT to improve digital platforms and online promotion of Nyeriβs tourism attractions.
The committee further discussed resource mobilization, partnerships and community service activities.
Members agreed to assign responsibilities and continue working together to ensure successful implementation of the planned activities and to enhance Nyeriβs profile as a global scouting and tourism destination.
Members present included Mr. Patrick Githinji, CNG, Mr. Katumo Mwendwa, SDW, Ms. Grace Chacha from Foreign Affairs, Ms. Rosemary Thairu, a representative from the Kenya Girl Guides Association and Miss Mary Mbugua, Miss Tourism Nyeri County, among other committee members.
