Today, we hosted East Africa School of Aviation students on an academic visit at Kenya Maritime Authority, Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.
The visit provided an opportunity for the students to gain practical knowledge on maritime communications, navigation systems, and the role of technology in enhancing safety, security, and efficiency within the maritime sector.

The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) hosted the Youth Futures Collaborative at KMA Bahari Towers for an engagement focused on expanding young people’s understanding of opportunities within the Blue Economy.

The programme featured a courtesy meeting with the Director General, CPA Omar Nyarandi, followed by a learning session on “Unlocking the Blue Economy: Preparing Youth for the Future of Maritime Work.”

Discussions highlighted:
Maritime education and skills development to prepare youth for emerging careers in the maritime sector.
KMA’s role in facilitating trade and economic development that creates employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
The Authority’s policy and regulatory mandate in promoting an inclusive and sustainable Blue Economy.

Participants also toured the Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (RMRCC), where they gained insights into Kenya’s maritime search and rescue operations and KMA’s efforts to enhance safety and security in the country’s waters.

The Director, Saflog Shipping Services, Mr. Suleiman Bachoo, officially handed over paid internship offer letters to Logistics students and a sponsorship cheque to support the Eligibility Test and the issuance of Certificates of Proficiency for shipping and logistics students.

The cheque, presented to the Kenya Maritime Authority, Director General, CPA Omae Nyarandi, will benefit students from Bandari Maritime Academy, Kenya Coast National Polytechnic, Kenya Methodist University, and the Technical University of Mombasa among others during the first phase of the sponsorship programme.

This milestone marks the first phase of the implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed between the Kenya Maritime Authority and Saflog Shipping Services. The partnership is aimed at strengthening offshore maritime education and training by supporting students' professional certification, enhancing industry readiness, and promoting the development of a competent workforce for Kenya's maritime and logistics sector.

The Kenya Maritime Authority appreciates Saflog Shipping Services for its commitment to investing in the next generation of maritime professionals and looks forward to the successful implementation of other areas of cooperation under the partnership, including student internships, industrial attachments, and practical skills development.

The Director General of the Kenya Maritime Authority, CPA Omae Nyarandi, accompanied the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Hon. Ali Hassan Joho, and the Principal Secretary, State Department for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Aden Milah, as they appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Diaspora and Migrant Workers to present a status update on the implementation of the Kenya Seafarers’ Identity Document (SID) project.

The engagement highlighted the Government’s commitment to expanding global employment opportunities for Kenyan seafarers through the rollout of a secure, internationally compliant Seafarers’ Identity Document that will enhance their global mobility, identity protection, and professional recognition.

The project has already achieved significant milestones, including security enhancements at the production facility at Bahari Towers, successful testing of card personalization equipment, and preparations for Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) integration with the Communications Authority of Kenya, which is currently awaiting completion.

Engineered to comply with International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 185 and ICAO specifications, the Kenya e-SID will provide machine-readable, globally recognized credentials that meet the highest international standards, opening more opportunities for Kenyan seafarers in the global maritime industry.
