Demonstration Materials Reach Wards in Rongo, Uriri and Suna West Sub-Counties

MIGORI COUNTY: The distribution of demonstration materials under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP) continues to gain momentum, with wards in Rongo, Uriri and Suna West sub-counties receiving materials to support practical farmer training.

The materials, procured from qualified local suppliers through a rigorous procurement process led by the Community-Driven Development Committees (CDDCs), are being delivered to designated demonstration sites to facilitate hands-on training of farmers on the five prioritized value chains in Migori County.

Through the demonstration sites and upcoming Farmer Field Schools (FFSs), farmers will have an opportunity to learn by doing, observe improved technologies and adopt recommended production practices.

The involvement of qualified local suppliers and community-led procurement processes promotes quality, transparency, accountability and local economic participation, while ensuring that beneficiary groups receive the materials needed for effective demonstrations.

The ongoing rollout is laying a strong foundation for improved farmer knowledge, enhanced productivity and increased market participation while strengthening last-mile agricultural extension services across Migori County.

Migori County Strengthens Banana Value Chain Through NAVCDP Training

Migori County has commenced a five-day capacity-building training for Sub-County Technical Teams (SCTTs) on Technologies, Innovations and Management Practices in the Banana Value Chain under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP).

The training, taking place at the Heritage Annex Hotel in Migori from 7th to 11th September 2026, brings together agricultural technical officers and other stakeholders to strengthen their capacity in promoting improved and sustainable banana production across the county.

The programme covers key areas of the banana value chain, including the status and potential of banana production in Migori County, banana development strategy and investment planning, ecological requirements and production niches, banana varieties, propagation and management.

Participants will also receive practical training on banana propagation and identification of varieties, orchard establishment, climate-smart banana agronomic practices, and integrated soil and fertility management for banana production.

The training is facilitated by experts and technical officers from NAVCDP, KALRO, the County Department of Agriculture and other value chain stakeholders.

Banana remains an important food security and income-generating crop with significant potential to create employment and improve livelihoods along its value chain. Strengthening the capacity of technical teams is therefore expected to enhance the transfer of appropriate technologies and innovations to farmers.

Through the NAVCDP, Migori County continues to invest in building the capacity of agricultural stakeholders and promoting priority value chains to enhance productivity, market participation, food security and household incomes.

The training is expected to equip the technical teams with the knowledge and skills needed to support farmers in adopting improved, climate-smart and sustainable banana production practices across Migori County.

Migori Strengthens Last-Mile Extension as CBFs Complete First Training Phase

Migori County Navcdp Project has taken a major step towards bringing agricultural extension services closer to farmers following the completion of the first phase of a 21-day training programme for Community-Based Facilitators (CBFs) in Farmer Field Schools (FFS).

The first phase, concluded on Friday, covered 11 days of intensive training, with the remaining 10 days expected to be completed before the end of September.

The training is equipping CBFs with practical skills to facilitate Farmer Field Schools, support field demonstrations and promote the adoption of improved agricultural practices at community level.

The facilitators are being trained in key areas including climate-smart agriculture, crop and livestock production, pest and disease management, soil and water conservation, farm business management, value addition and market linkages.

Through the Farmer Field School approach, farmers learn by doing—identifying challenges, testing solutions and sharing practical experiences.

Once deployed, the CBFs will complement government extension officers and help ensure farmers receive timely technical advice and support within their communities.

The initiative is expected to strengthen agricultural productivity, resilience and incomes while improving access to extension services across Migori County.

The ongoing 21-day programme marks a key milestone in building a stronger, community-based last-mile agricultural extension system that puts farmers at the centre of learning and agricultural transformation.

A Bigger Harvest Starts with a Better Seed: Migori Farmers Speak

Farmers across Migori County are expressing appreciation for the certified maize seed provided by the County Government through the Farm Inputs Access Programme, implemented by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Blue Economy.

The timely support is giving farmers renewed confidence as they prepare for the 2026 short rains season. Beneficiaries say the quality of the seed, combined with good agronomic practices, has the potential to significantly improve maize production and household food security.

Farmers are already reporting 2–4 cobs from a single maize plant, compared with the lower yields they experienced previously.

“We appreciate the certified seed because we are seeing a difference in the crop. Getting 2–4 cobs from one plant gives us hope for a much better harvest. If this is replicated across our farms, villages and wards, the increase in food production will be significant.” — Beneficiary farmer from Got Kachola ward.

When multiplied across thousands of farms, even a modest improvement in the number of productive cobs per plant can translate into substantial gains in overall maize production.

The initiative demonstrates what bottom-up food security can look like—putting quality seed and the right inputs in the hands of farmers, strengthening extension support, and allowing improved productivity to translate into better household food security.

As farmers prepare for the anticipated November rains, they are encouraged to undertake proper land preparation, plant on time, use certified seed and observe good crop and fodder management practices.

MIGORI CAIP: DEVELOPMENT IN ACTION

The operationalisation of the Migori County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) has received a significant boost following engagements involving Governor Dr. Ochilo Ayacko, Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, and Dr. Christopher Wanjau, Chief of Staff in the Office of the Deputy President. CECM Dr. Betty Samburu represented the County Government of Migori...

KSh32 million will be allocated to address variations in material costs, while KSh100 million will finance common-user machinery for animal-feed production.

The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) will upgrade the Osiri–CAIP Road to bitumen standard and connect it to the Posta–Nyarongi Road. The works are expected to be completed within 24 months. ICT infrastructure will be installed within four weeks.

Governor Dr ochillo Ayacko has also proposed the development of affordable housing at the CAIP site to accommodate the anticipated workforce and users, subject to consideration by the relevant departments.

The CAIP is expected to be officially opened in December by President William Ruto and Governor Dr. Ochilo Ayacko.
