H.E Dr. Andrew Mwadime - Wakujaa, EGH, Governor Taita Taveta County has released Ksh 5,328,507 in scholarship cheques to support 200 Form 3 and Form 4 students across Taita Taveta County.

Governor Mwadime handed over the cheques to secondary school principals at his Mwatate office today, in a move aimed at cushioning vulnerable families and keeping learners in class amid tough economic times.

He pointed to a directive that had earlier barred counties from issuing bursaries, forcing Taita Taveta to halt support for needy students.

The Ksh 5.3 million disbursement is the latest in a series of interventions by his administration to protect access to education.

The successful installation of a new 315KVA electricity transformer, replaces the earlier vandalized 220KVA unit that had delayed the projectโ€™s completion, a milestone which marks a major breakthrough for thousands of farmers who have for years endured exploitation by middlemen and incurred extra costs transporting paddy rice across the border for value addition.

Under the leadership of H.E Dr. Andrew Mwadime - Wakujaa, EGH, Governor Taita Taveta County, the County Government of Taita Taveta has continued to strengthen the rice value chain through expansion of rice farms, improvement of road infrastructure, and introduction of high-yielding paddy varieties to farmers in Mboghoni Ward.

Currently, farmers in Taveta cultivate rice varieties including Kwamboka, Arize and Faro 5, with production averaging 6.75 tons per hectare annually. Once commissioned, the milling plant is expected to produce at least 3 tons of rice per hour, positioning Taita Taveta among Kenyaโ€™s notable rice-producing regions and contribute significantly towards bridging the countryโ€™s rice deficit.

Listen as Energy CECM Arch. Martin Tairo Maseghe, today led other officers for an inspection tour at the facility, reaffirming the county governmentโ€™s commitment towards ensuring the plant becomes fully operational within the next few weeks.

Mwalugha noted that coconut farming holds great potential in several parts of Taita Taveta due to the countyโ€™s favorable climatic conditions. He reaffirmed the county governmentโ€™s commitment to supporting farmers through the provision of certified seedlings, extension services and modern farming practices aimed at boosting productivity and household incomes.

He further called upon Members of the County Assembly to allocate at least KSh1 million from their Ward Equalization Fund towards the purchase of certified seeds and manure ahead of the upcoming short rains season to further support local farmers and enhance food production.
