Taita Taveta Stakeholders Seek Joint Approach to Donkey Welfare, Wildlife Conservation
Taita Taveta County Government, in collaboration with MAZIDO International and Brooke East Africa, has convened stakeholders to strengthen collaboration on donkey welfare, wildlife conservation and community livelihoods. The engagement brought together County officials, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Lumo and other partners to identify shared challenges and practical solutions.
Speaking during the meeting, CECM for Agriculture, Livestock Production, Irrigation, Cooperatives Development and Blue Economy Dawson Katuu Mzenge said donkey welfare is closely linked to household livelihoods, particularly in transport, water access and agricultural activities. He called for a coordinated approach that also addresses human-wildlife conflict, disease surveillance and community resilience.
Mazido International Executive Director Rhodah Mwashigadi said the engagement provides an opportunity for stakeholders to map shared challenges, set priorities and establish a structured framework for collaboration. Brooke East Africa Programme Manager Elijah Mithigi emphasized the importance of partnerships, research and information sharing in addressing predation, disease and competition for resources.
Through the donkey welfare project, 293 donkey owners caring for 679 donkeys have been reached, while four groups have established fodder banks producing 296 bales. In collaboration with KWS, 68 predator-proof bomas have also been constructed, protecting 144 donkeys, while 460 donkeys and 5,682 dogs have been vaccinated against rabies.
Stakeholders identified human-wildlife conflict, disease risks, wildlife crime, bush slaughter, research and data sharing, and community resilience as key areas requiring joint action. The partnership seeks to promote improved donkey welfare, wildlife conservation and sustainable livelihoods across Taita Taveta County.
