GOVERNMENT CHEMIST REPORT INDICATE HIGH LEVELS OF AGRO-CHEMICALS IN KISHENYI DAM RESPONSIBLE FOR DEATH OF FISH IN THE DAM

Report from the Government Chemist has shown that presence of high levels of iron, bicarbonates and high alkalinity levels in Kishenyi Dam led to the death of fish in the dam.

The report says the high levels of the chemicals have been attributed to excessive use of agro-chemicals by farmers which are drained into the dam by water.

In three samples analysed, two samples had high levels of iron compared to the recommended levels. In the first sample the iron levels stood at 0.43 PPM (part per million), the second sample the levels stood at 2.46PPM while in the third sample the levels were at 0.106PPM. The recommended maximum limit of iron in water is 0.3PPM.

Traces of bicarbonates were also found to be high in all the three samples tested. In the first sample the levels stood at 464.8PPM mg/l, 683PPM mg/l in the second sample and 527PPM mg/l in the third sample. The recommended maximum level of bicarbonates in water is 300PPM mg/l.

In the pesticide analysis, one of the water samples was found to contain high levels of methomyl. Methomyl is a highly toxic carbamate insecticide.

The dead fish was also tested for the availability of toxins but none were found, thus their death was caused by high levels of carbon dioxide in the water.

The government chemist recommended thorough treatment of the water before use by both livestock and human beings.
