The Mondulkiri Project is run by the Cambodian Elephant Rescue Organisation, a registered Cambodian ngo. Our aims are to protect a forested valley from logging and create an elephant sanctuary for rescued elephants to retire to away from elephant rides and hard physical. We invite people to visit the Project – a forested area with beautiful waterfalls, swimming holes and valleys, located near Sen Monorom. Our elephant sanctuary is now home to rescued elephants who are free to roam around doing whatever elephants love to do - eating, drinking, scratching against trees and playing in the mud. We offer a variety of jungle trekking options, encounters with elephants, information on Bunong customs and traditions. The Mondulkiri Project's mission is to support the local community by providing it with an opportunity to have an income without having to cut down all its forests. The forests are a limited resource facing increasing pressures from rubber plantations and farming.

Meet Pey, one of the people behind the elephants. 🌿🐘

Pey is one of our Bunong mahouts at the Mondulkiri Project and spends his days in the forest with our elephant Comvine.

For generations, Bunong people in Mondulkiri have lived alongside elephants and depended on the surrounding forests. That local knowledge and relationship with the forest remain an important part of our sanctuary today.

Supporting elephants is only part of what the Mondulkiri Project was created to do.

By visiting us, you also help provide jobs and income for Bunong families and give the forest greater value standing than being cleared.

People, elephants and forest — all three are connected. 💚

When the day's almost over at the Mondulkiri Project. 🌅🌿

Our Jungle Lodge looks out across the forested hills of Mondulkiri — and occasionally the evening decides to put on a show like this.

For guests staying overnight, this is a very different side of the sanctuary experience: the elephants have disappeared into the forest, the jungle begins to quieten, and there’s nowhere you need to be.

Hello, Happy. 🐘💚

One of the wonderful things about spending a full day with our elephants is having time to simply watch them.

You begin to notice that every elephant has her own habits, preferences and personality — and Happy certainly has plenty of personality.

The Mondulkiri Project has always been about more than elephants.

We were established to protect forest, provide a better future for elephants and create employment and opportunities for the local Bunong community.

Traditional Bunong culture such as this Bunong house is an important part of Mondulkiri — and an important part of the story of our Project.

Some of the loveliest moments at the sanctuary are the ones that simply happen. 🐘💚

Our elephants decide for themselves whether they want to enter the river, bathe, wander through the forest or stop to eat.

Guests get the privilege of spending time around them while they go about their day — without riding and without forcing them to perform.

On our two day tour, exploring jungle trails and magical waterfalls all form part of the experience.

This is what we want life to look like for Rumkeurn. 🌿🐘

Space to wander, forest to explore, plenty to eat — and his mahout quietly nearby keeping an eye on him.

Rumkeurn is still relatively new to the Mondulkiri Project, and we’re continuing to learn more about him as he settles into his new surroundings.

It’s wonderful seeing him becoming more comfortable in the forest.

Rumkeurn is looking very much at home. 🐘🌿

Our newest elephant, Rumkeurn, is settling into life at the Mondulkiri Project — spending his days wandering through the forest, foraging and exploring his new surroundings.

For an elephant, there are few things more important than having the freedom to move, choose where to go and spend time simply behaving like an elephant.

And a protected forest around him, Rumkeurn has plenty to explore. 💚

We’re very happy to have him with us.
