🌱 Local Produce, Local Partnerships

At Horsford’s Valu Mart, supporting local farmers means making fresh, locally grown produce available to customers.

Sherolyn David, Meats, Perishable & Specialty Manager, highlights the variety of local produce currently in stock, including sun melon, pineapples, and carambola.

During the recent pineapple season, increased local production created an opportunity for the supermarket to source more pineapples directly from local farmers. Customers continue to appreciate locally grown pineapples for their freshness, taste, and quality.

It’s a partnership that benefits everyoneβ€”from our food heroes in the field to the customers bringing local produce home. πŸ‡°πŸ‡³πŸ

🌴 Building Capacity for a Stronger Coconut Sector

The Department of Agriculture has received 500 Brazilian coconut seedlings through a capacity-building initiative led in collaboration with the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), focused on coconut propagation, agronomy, and pest and disease management.

The official handover marks an important step in strengthening local capacity and expanding opportunities for coconut production. The initiative also provides technical knowledge to support successful coconut establishment, management, and production.

With continued investment in knowledge, resources, and resilient production systems, we are laying the groundwork for a stronger and more productive agricultural sector. πŸŒ±πŸ‡°πŸ‡³

🌱 Agriculture is Working | Farmer Spotlight

Meet Leon Anthony, aka β€œYellow,” a crop farmer from St. Peter’s, Ogees Village, cultivating five acres of land and producing pineapples, watermelon, squash, tomatoes, and more.

With more than 5,000 pineapple slips provided through the Ministry of Agriculture, Leon has already harvested over 15,000 pounds of pineapples and continues to harvest.

Beyond production, Leon is looking toward the future. He believes protected agriculture can help farmers produce more using less land, while encouraging the younger generation to see agriculture as a viable, modern, and rewarding path.

His vision is simple: make agriculture more attractive to young people and inspire them to become the next generation of food heroes

As Leon puts it, working together to strengthen local production is essential to making food security a national priority in St. Kitts and Nevis. πŸŒ±πŸ‡°πŸ‡³
