THE 64TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ATTACK ON THE MONCADA BARRACKS, 26TH July, 1953, BY FIDEL CASTRO REMEMBERED! By Earle Clarke, PRO, SK.N. CUBA FRIENDSHIP ASSOCIATION: 26/07/2017

“There are some leaders who were born to decorate the pages of history with their heroic contribution to the betterment of the world and the oppressed people who inhabit it. The impact made becomes outstandingly outstanding, especially when they sacrifice their life of privilege to enter the fray, to liberate those oppressed, exploited, dehumanized, degraded group of people. These leaders need no monument with which to be remembered, for they have impacted the world favorably with their contribution and are therefore immortalized in the hearts of the people the world over!” Kennedy Earle Clarke

The 26th July anywhere in the world where Cubans work or reside, is a very sacred date in the history of their country, for it was the preface or the prelude to the 1959 Successful Revolution in the country. The attack on this 1000 well-armed and well trained second largest garrison in Cuba –The Moncada Barracks, was a remote outpost in the Oriente Province in the easternmost province in Cuba and named after General Guillermon Moncada, a hero of the War of Independence. The barrack was attacked by a small band, numbering some 160 poorly armed but determined Revolutionaries, led by Fidel Castro and his brother Raul. The attack failed and some 61 of the original attackers were tortured to death by the Batista forces. Fidel and Raul along with many others were captured and tried. It was at his trial that Fidel made his Historical Indelible Speech: “Sentence Me, It Does Not Matter. History Will Absolve Me!” Raul was sentenced to 13 years and Fidel to 15 years imprisonment.

In Greek mythology, it is said, “Who the gods love and have ordained to decorate the pages of history for their contributions to the world and mankind, they protect:” This could have been the case with Fidel and his brother, because, in 1955 through the agitation of many citizens, Batista ordered the release of all political prisoners. Fidel and Raul fled to Mexico where they encountered many disillusioned Cubans who aligned themselves with the 26th July Movement. Before venturing further into the meat of the presentation, let me take a peek into the life of the dictator Fulgencio Batista 1901-1973. He was an army sergeant who ruled Cuba from 1940-1944; He overthrew the government of President Carlos Prio which was poised to win the General Elections in 1952. His Government was recognized by the most vicious anti workers country in the world, the USA, on May 27th. Young fiery Lawyer, Fidel Castro on principle, tried his utmost to bring Batista to Court to answer for the illegal takeover of the Government, but was thwarted in his attempts several times. Since legal means failed, Fidel decided to take the Revolutionary pathway.

Under the Batista regime, citizens of the USA flocked to the country for relaxation and to stay at the famous hotels and casinos. The USA mafia had a strong presence on the island; Gangster Lucky Luciano lived there for a time and mobster Meyer Lansky worked with Batista to complete projects including the Havana Riviera Hotel. The mafia was in charge of the hotels, the casinos and the whorehouses in the country. The USA multinationals owned all the sugar plantations, the oil refineries and the nickel plants. Fulgencio Batista took a huge cut of all casino earnings and amassed millions of dollars. Although the Capital Havana prospered from these tourist related activities, outside of it, the ordinary Cuban experienced a grim reality. There was no Ronald Reagan filtering down from the rich to the poor. This grim reality forced the poor, oppressed to turn to and join the ranks of the 26th of July Movement for their redemption. The swelling of and strengthening of the ranks of the Revolutionaries in the mountains, influenced Batista to use his police and security forces to become more brutal, using torture and murder in their attempts to stall the swelling ranks of the Revolutionaries.

In 1956, after organizing and training in Mexico, Fidel, Raul, Che Guevara returned to Cuba on the yatch Granma, which they purchased and refitted. In late 1958, after the capture of Santa Clara by the Che Guevara column, Batista realized that his day of reckoning was nigh and he fled the country taking millions of dollars from the treasury with him on January 1st, 1959. The 1959 Cuban Revolution was born. Fidel Castro set out immediately to eradicate the 70% illiteracy rating which plagued the island and its people and was successful in this “Yes I can!” operation two years later in 1961. Not only did the Cuban people benefitted from the introduction of FREE EDUCATION FROM KINDERGARTEN TO UNIVERSITY, but students from the Third World Countries who were unable to access University Education due to the exorbitant prices imposed by the so-called developed countries. The whole world knows that Fidel and his brother were born into wealth, but they were touched by the plight of their fellow men and women; they realized that their privileged position was enjoyed from the sweat, the toil, the tears of those who toiled on their father’s plantation. Their hearts of compassion, their Love for their fellowmen, their consciences forced them to take a principled stand to alleviate those sufferings and to liberate the down trodden of the country.

In nationalizing the land in the country, they nationalized their father’s plantation as well. When the oligarchs speak about the Castro dictators, always remind them, that true dictators do not alleviate their people from ignorance by educating them; they keep them in abject ignorance so that they can subjugate them! How can you take the veil of ignorance from my eyes through education, enabling me to think for myself, to see the world as it is and then turn around and replace that veil over my eyes? May the Cuban people enjoy the SACREDNESS of the day and may those who have benefitted immensely by Cuba despite the illegal economic embargo imposed by the World’s worst anti- working-class country, join in the Historical Significance of this date. Long Live the 1959 Cuban Revolution! Long Live the Cuban Leaders and the Heroic Defenders of the Revolution. VENCERAMOS! (TO WIN)

The President
The United States of America
The White House, Washington DC, USA.
June 18th, 2017

“Men of genuine excellence in every station in life, men of industry, of integrity, of high principles, of sterling honesty of purpose, command the spontaneous homage of mankind. It is natural to believe in such men, to have confidence in them. All that is good in the world is upheld by them and, without their presence in the world, it would not be worth living in:” Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dear President Donald Trump,
The world is tired and weary of war and rumours of war, for war kills, war maims, war destroys, war causes untold trauma, war disrupts the normal way of life. Only those who possess shares in the military industrial complex, favour war, because they amass huge profits from the sacrificed lives of those who are innocently hauled into the nefarious act of wiping out large segments of the population of the country against which war is declared. The Preamble Of The United Nations reads thus: We, The Peoples Of The United Nations, Determined To Save Succeeding Generations From The Scourge Of War Which Twice In Our Lifetime Has Brought Untold Sorrow To Mankind and, To regain faith in the fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women ( The introduction of the Apartheid System in 1948) and of nations large and small and, To establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and, To promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedoms, AND FOR THESE ENDS,
To practice and to live in peace with one another as good neighbours and, To unite our strength to maintain international peace and security and, To ensure by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods that armed force shall not be used save in the common interest and, To employ international machinery for the promotion and economic advancement of all peoples, HAVE RESOLVED TO COMBINE OUR EFFORTS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE AIMS. The elimination of the scourge of war should not have introduced the Korean War June 25th, 1950-July 27th, 1953, the Vietnam War November 1, 1955-April 30th, 1975, in which the United Nations became totally involved.
Chapter 1 ARTICLE 1 (2) THE PURPOSE OF THE UNITED NATIONS reads, To develop friendly relations among nations based on RESPECT for the principles of equal rights and SELF DETERMINATION of peoples and to take appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace: Article 2(1) reads, The organization is based on the principle of the SOVEREIGN EQUALITY of all its members: 2 (3) reads, All members shall settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security and justice are not endangered: 2(4) reads, All members shall refrain in their international relations from the THREAT OR USE OF FORCE against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state or in any other manner inconsistent with the PURPOSES OF THE UNITED NATIONS.
Mr. President, in none of the Chapters or Articles of the United Nations Charter, is there any mention of the authorization to fight against COMMUNISM or SOCIALISM. As a matter of fact, Sir, it was the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia which ushered in the elimination of child labour from the mines owned by the capitalist Czar and sent those children to school to receive an education: It was the Russian Revolution which introduced Holiday with Pay, Maternity Leave for women, Equal pay for women and men, Free Education, Social Security, Free Medical Attention for workers.
In the pre-1959 Cuban Revolution, under Batista which was supported by the USA, little girls at the age of 13, on their way to school were abducted and forced to work as prostitutes in brothels owned by citizens of the USA. Under the Batista regime, 70% (seventy percent of the population of eleven million) were illiterate, lived in degradingly sub-human conditions with no access to proper medical attention. Within two years of the Revolution, 1959-1961, illiteracy was completely eradicated. Not even in the USA which has been Independent from 1776-2017=241 years has this feat been accomplished? How can you subjugate a people Sir, when you have dispersed the dark clouds of ignorance from their minds, enabling them to be enlightened as to what is happening around and about them? How can you deny a people whom you have educated from kindergarten to university level of their basic human rights? How is this possible Sir? Cuba, under the U.N. Charter, is a Sovereign Nation and Member and has a right to chart its own course of development, the same way that the USA has a sovereign right to pursue the capitalist pathway to its development.
If Cuba chooses the Socialist Pathway, it is a Sovereign Nation with a sovereign right to do so. Every country, large or small, should be left totally alone to develop itself and its people free from the threat or use of force against its territorial integrity or political independence. How can the USA trade with The Peoples Republic of China and Communist Russia, but impose sanctions on Cuba for pursuing the same pathway of development? Why, therefore should Cuba be targeted by the USA? Both countries, according to the U.N. Charter, should be living in peace and harmony as good neighbours? Why should the USA and not the United Nations impose such a draconian embargo upon a sovereign nation which has not declared war on it? How could a country which is harbouring the terrorist Luis Posada who bombed a Cubana Airline off the coast of Barbados, killing all 71 passengers and crew on board, find the moral authority to declare another country a State sponsor of terrorism when that same very country (the accuser), has the terrorist who bombed the 1976 Cubana Airline, walking its streets a free man?
Mr. President, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, The United Arab Emirates, Brunei, Oman, Bahrain, Jordon, The Vatican, never held elections in their history; The USA never condemned any of these countries for not holding elections but is always quick to pounce on Cuba which holds elections. Sir, in the year 2016, Presidential Elections were held in the USA. Your rival, Hilary Clinton, amassed some three million more votes than you did, yet, you are the President today! Isn’t Democracy about majority rule? Why is it that so much money has to be wasted on an election which is supposed to be a simple civic exercise? In Cuba, school children guard the ballot boxes. Is this the model that you wish to impose on the rest of the world? If all the countries and members of the United Nations were to adhere to its Charter as their guide, Respect for the Sovereignty and the Political Independence of each member will be practiced and Peace and Harmony will prevail in the world, for we are all dependent one on the other, hence the necessity to co-exist peaceably with each other. “All members shall settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security and justice are not endangered.”
On April 12th 2015, your predecessor, President Barack Obama met with President Raul Castro in Panama City and this is what the USA President said, “This is obviously an historic meeting. Decades of tension had done little to benefit Cubans or citizens of the United States. It is time for us to try something new. We are now in a position to move on a path toward the future.” President Raul Castro replied, “I trust President Obama and I acknowledge there will be difficult stumbling blocks as my country tries to repair ties with the USA, but difficulties can be surmounted. We need to be patient!” This was the beginning of the over fifty year thaw in the relationship between Cuba and the USA. The world rejoiced at this bold step. On June 16th, 2017, in order to appease some of your Republican supporters who are in the minority, you reversed the historical hands of the clock by dismantling all that the Pope, President Obama, President Raul Castro and the rest of the world spent endless hours in advancing. Was your move Sir, an attempt to erase the legacy of your predecessor President Obama, or was it intended to appease Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Miami who is on the Senate Intelligence Committee? Either way, Sir, Is a retrogressive and a dictatorial step!
The right wing publication on the internet which calls itself The Havana Times although it is not printed in Havana, in its publication of JUNE 1st, 2017, carried an article DATED May 31st, 2017 entitled, “Safety Draws Tourists to Cuba!” USA tourists commented on the fact that they felt safe in Cuba. They can walk the streets at any hour of the night and they are not molested. They can travel to the Malecon and sit on the sea wall in the early hours of the morn and nobody molests them. Sometime in March, a tourist dropped his wallet containing 3,300 Euros; three young men found his wallet, took it to their parents who in turn marched the boys to the Police Station. The wallet was returned to its owner and the boys highly complimented. This is the experience the USA visitor is confronted with in Cuba. They are treated as human beings; they observe the Cubans living a simple but enjoyable and friendly life with which they can easily identify and be absorbed into the humanity abounding in plentiful supply on the island. With the stroke of your pen Sir, you rob them of this humanly experience by curtailing their travel to Cuba cloaking your decision with the absurdity that the tourist industry is owned by the military in Cuba; and President Raul Castro is labeled a dictator?
President Trump, despite the circumstances facing your election into the White House as the President of the USA, you can make a positive contribution to the betterment of the world by ushering a new period of peace and human understanding. You can burnish the image of the USA by adhering to the principles set out in the United Nations Charter—Respect for the sovereignty and the political independence of all member countries of the U.N which is a noble organization intended to transform the world into an oasis of friendliness and neighbourliness, each co-existing side by side in peace and harmony. It is not an impossible task for you to undertake and accomplish. Just read the above mentioned quote by Martin Luther King Jr. I wish you the very best in office; as long as you stick to principles Mr. President, your tenure in the White House will be applauded by the inhabitants of Planet Earth. There is a Latin Quotation: “Principia non homines. Principle not men!”
Yours Respectfully,
Kenney Earle Clarke
