Yongpyong is Korea’s oldest ski resort and was a major venue for the 2018 Winter Olympics. The Balwangsan Gondola stretches nearly 4 km, offering stunning views of snow-covered ridges. Explore Pungsuwon Cathedral, Hoengseong ⛪️
In a quiet mountain village of Hoengseong, Pungsuwon Cathedral is one of Korea’s oldest Catholic churches, built in 1888 and known for its red-brick Romanesque architecture surrounded by forests and peaceful walking paths. The cathedral was constructed by believers who molded bricks by hand, creating a sacred place that represents the resilience and faith of Korea’s early Catholic community.

Pungsuwon Cathedral was the first parish established in Gangwon and was completed in 1910 by Fr. Jeong Gyu-ha, the first Korean priest to build a church himself. It served as a refuge for Catholics fleeing persecution, eventually becoming a major faith center where more than 30 priests have been ordained. The cathedral complex includes registered cultural heritage buildings, quiet prayer spaces, and scenic autumn foliage that draws visitors year-round.
