Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives 21 years ago during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. We honor the memories of the souls we lost on September 11, 2001, and pay tribute to all of the patriots and their families who have sacrificed their lives in defense of freedom. Those killed in New York City, Shanksville, PA and at the Pentagon will never be forgotten. Because of them, the Army continues to remain vigilant and ready to meet any future challenge.
On Dec. 18, 2001, President Bush signed Public Law No: 107-89, designating Sept. 11 as Patriot Day. In 2009, Congress designated Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. On this day, the American flag is flown at half-staff. A moment of silence begins at 8:46 a.m. EDT, the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
