Last week the USC along with the USFK RSO paid a visit to the ROKS Cheonan Memorial.
The ROKS Cheonan sinking occurred on 26 March 2010, when the Cheonan, a Pohang-class corvette of the Republic of Korea Navy, carrying 104 personnel, was torpedoed and sank off the country's west coast near Baengnyeong Island in the Yellow Sea, killing 46 seamen.
Our team toured the memorial hall which reproduces records related to the Cheonan and some of the interior of the ship at the time. It also explains data related to salvage and rescue operations, the cause of the sinking, etc. Lastly, there is a memorial hall for the 46 sailors who died. The actual Cheonan is on display in the outdoor exhibition space, and a guide sailor explains the details surrounding the Cheonan.
Before departing, the USC held a small ceremony to bid farewell to the RSO CDR, MAJ Choi as he heads off to the ROKA equivalent of the US Army's ILE. Thank you for your support and cheerful presence in the office Sir, you will be missed!
