Embassy Explores STEM Education Partnership with Samsung Dream Scholarship Foundation

As part of its ongoing efforts to expand educational opportunities for Zambian students through strategic partnerships with Korean institutions, the Embassy of the Republic of Zambia in the Republic of Korea held a meeting with the Samsung Dream Scholarship Foundation (SDSF) to explore potential areas of cooperation in education, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

During the meeting, the Chairman of the Samsung Dream Scholarship Foundation, Professor Wooseung Kim, outlined the Foundation's extensive contribution to education and human capital development across Africa. He noted that the Foundation has invested approximately USD 426 million in scholarships, capacity-building programmes, and the establishment of STEM initiatives in collaboration with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across the continent.

Professor Kim expressed the Foundation's strong interest in supporting Zambia's STEM education agenda and revealed that the Foundation has earmarked approximately USD 340,000 to support STEM-related initiatives in Zambia. He further indicated that the Foundation is ready to enter into a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) involving the Foundation, either the Central Government or a Local Authority in Zambia, and the participating school that will be selected to implement the initiative. He explained that this collaborative framework would provide a structured mechanism for implementing the project by clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of each partner while ensuring effective implementation and sustainability.

In response, Charge d'Affaires a.i. Mrs. Wrayrose Hamweene expressed appreciation to the Samsung Dream Scholarship Foundation for selecting Zambia as one of the beneficiaries of the initiative. She noted that Zambia has approximately 52 STEM secondary schools, providing a strong foundation for implementing the proposed programme.

Mrs. Hamweene assured the Foundation that the Embassy would facilitate further engagements with Zambia's Ministry of Education to advance the proposal and ensure its successful implementation. She emphasized that the Government of the Republic of Zambia has placed education, skills development and STEM at the centre of its national development agenda, recognising them as critical drivers for economic transformation, innovation and sustainable development. She added that this commitment is firmly anchored in the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP), which identifies quality education and human capital development as essential pillars for achieving Zambia's medium- and long-term development goals.

She further expressed optimism that the proposed partnership would culminate in the signing of the tripartite Memorandum of Understanding and pave the way for the successful implementation of impactful STEM programmes that will empower Zambian learners with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to compete in the global knowledge economy.

The engagement forms part of the Embassy's broader strategy to mobilise partnerships that contribute to Zambia's education sector, human capital development and the implementation of the country's development priorities through international cooperation. The proposed collaboration is expected to strengthen STEM education, foster innovation and equip young Zambians with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
