【Why Did People Line Up with Baskets? 🧺🍬】
When snacks were made, some would break or come out imperfect. Around the Haitai Confectionery factory in Namyeong-dong, Yongsan, these unsellable snack pieces were known as “giribbashi.”
These included broken hardtack and misshapen candy that could not be sold but were still edible. The snacks were distributed to local residents on an irregular basis, and recipients had to be accompanied by a guardian aged 15 or older.
People would come carrying baskets to receive these precious treats.
Local children also tossed berries toward the factory windows, hoping to get candy from the young women working inside. The workers would throw candy back down, and if a piece landed in the stream, the children would shout,
“Throw it gently!”
Sweet memories of Yongsan, preserved in even the smallest piece of candy.
