📣 New Minimum Wage – Effective 1 January 2026

There are special minimum wage calculations for certain categories of workers. Here’s what employees and employers need to know 👇

1. Employees in the Service Industry (with approved gratuity schemes)
• The minimum wage will be CI$6.56/hour; increased from the previous rate of CI$4.50/hour.
• Importantly, employees are entitled to keep all gratuities they earn, on top of their regular wages.

2. Live-In Household Employees
• Must still be paid the minimum wage of CI$8.75/hour.
• Employers may apply no more than CI$2.19/hour as a credit for accommodations and utilities.
• This means the minimum cash wage that must be paid to a live-in domestic worker is CI$6.56/hour. This credit applies only to live-in household domestics.

3. Commission Based Employees
• Must still be paid the minimum wage of CI$8.75/hour.
• No more than CI$2.19/hour of the minimum wage can be counted from commission.
• Importantly, employees are still entitled to keep all commissions they earn, on top of their regular wages.

The National Minimum Basic Wage does not apply to:

> Self-employed persons
> Juveniles (a person under the age of seventeen years, who is required by law to attend school)
> Charitable Organisations (one registered and accepted as such by DLP)
> Churches

The latest report from the Office of the Auditor General highlights “fundamental weaknesses in financial oversight that must be addressed urgently,” warning that unreliable reporting “undermines effective governance and decision-making.” The report, released after controversy over shifting budget projections in Parliament's September Finance Committee meeting, also warns of government spending, growing unfunded healthcare liabilities, and violations of procurement laws.
