The Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability is proud to celebrate the achievement of Dr. Noviann McLean-Gregory, who has earned her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Cell Biology from the University of Kent and returned home to apply her expertise in support of the Cayman Islands.

As a Policy Support Officer, Dr. McLean-Gregory is helping to advance clinical pathways and public health policy, bringing valuable research experience and a deep commitment to improving health outcomes for our community.

Dr. McLean-Gregory reflected on the significance of her research:
“Knowing that my research connects directly to health challenges here at home made the work feel very meaningful. It wasn’t just theory; it had real-world relevance for the Cayman Islands.”

Minister for Health, Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Katherine Ebanks-Wilks, said:
“We are very pleased to recognise Noviann’s achievement and to see it translated into meaningful work within the Ministry and public service. It reflects the value of investing in people and ensuring that Caymanians are supported to develop their skills and apply them where they are most needed.”

Acting Chief Officer, Mrs. Exie Tomlinson-Panton, added:
“This is an excellent example of how academic excellence and public service can come together to deliver real impact. We are proud of Dr. McLean-Gregory and proud to have professionals within the Ministry who bring both international experience and local understanding to their work.”

Congratulations, Dr. McLean-Gregory, on this remarkable achievement and thank you for your dedication to strengthening public health in the Cayman Islands. 👏🏽🇰🇾

The Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability (MHES) and the Department of Health Regulatory Services (DHRS) are actively reviewing a proposed increase to Standard Health Insurance Contract (SHIC) premiums that could affect more than 12,000 residents across the Cayman Islands.

The proposed adjustment, submitted by Coralisle Medical Company LTD (CG Britcay) and scheduled to take effect on 1 July 2026, would increase premiums by approximately 25 per cent across all SHIC categories. According to the insurer, the increase is the first adjustment to SHIC rates since 2013 and is attributed to claims experience, healthcare cost trends and increased use of advanced medical services now available locally.

The Health Insurance Commission is aware of the significant implications of this proposed increase and its potential impact on the 12,200 employees and dependents currently enrolled under CG BritCay's SHIC policies.

Minister for Health, Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Katherine Ebanks-Wilks, said that "Government recognises the concern that the proposed increase has generated among workers, families and employers."

"Government is acutely aware of the cost-of-living pressures facing Caymanian families, workers and businesses. An increase of this magnitude would have a direct impact on more than 12,000 people who rely on SHIC coverage, and we understand the concern this announcement has generated," said Minister Ebanks-Wilks.

"Affordable healthcare coverage is not a luxury; it is a necessity. At a time when many households are already facing increasing costs, Government cannot simply stand by while a proposal of this scale is considered. My Ministry will continue working closely with the Health Insurance Commission and the Department of Health Regulatory Services to ensure that the interests of policyholders remain at the centre of this process."

Today is World Environment Day.🌎

This year’s theme reminds us to pay attention to the signals our environment is sending. Rising temperatures, changing weather patterns and increasing pressure on natural resources are all signs that action is needed.

Here in the Cayman Islands, we are responding with practical solutions: reducing single-use plastics, improving waste management, increasing energy efficiency, and developing the Cayman Islands Resilience Index (CIRI) to support smarter, evidence-based decisions that strengthen our resilience and access to climate finance.

These actions are aligned with the Cayman Islands Climate Change Policy 2024–2050 and the National Energy Policy 2024–2045, supporting national efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build a more sustainable future.

Together, these initiatives contribute to the Cayman Islands Government's strategic priorities of building a sustainable environment, resilient infrastructure, healthy communities and a strong economy.

The signals are clear. By working together, we can turn them into action. Climate action starts with every choice.

The National Weather Service has officially lifted its Dust Alert as conditions improve across the Cayman Islands.

Following comprehensive testing, the Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability, the Public Health Department, and the Department of Environmental Health confirmed that air quality remains safely within the Good to Moderate range.

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mark Paramlall, said: “Firstly, I want to thank the teams at the Department of Environmental Health for their hard work; the data they collected across schools and the community gives us a good picture of air quality conditions during this dust event. We are reassured that readings have remained within the Good to Moderate range, and that indoor environments at our schools showed that our pupils had good air quality.”

While conditions are improving, The Ministry advises the following precautions, particularly for sensitive individuals:

🔸Individuals with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other respiratory conditions should minimise prolonged outdoor exertion and ensure they have access to any prescribed inhalers or medications.

🔸The general public may resume normal outdoor activities; however, those who experience respiratory symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath should move indoors and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

🔸Windows and doors may be kept closed where feasible to reduce indoor particulate infiltration, and air conditioning systems should be set to recirculate indoor air.

🔸Parents and guardians of children with respiratory conditions are encouraged to monitor their children for symptoms and consult their healthcare provider if concerned.

Persons needing additional guidance or information can contact the Public Health Department on 244-2889 or 244-2621.
