Adapting to changing environmental pressures is key to protecting communities and supporting how Cayman functions day to day. Strengthening stormwater systems, addressing beach erosion and improving water flow all help communities remain stable as conditions change.

The Government continues to prioritise climate adaptation to support how Cayman operates as conditions change.

Did you know that less than 10% of all plastic ever produced has actually been recycled?

Today, the Cayman Islands Government observes World Environment Day, reminding us that climate action starts with every choice. As an island nation, protecting our fragile ecosystems is a shared responsibility.

Implementing a sustainable, cost-effective waste management strategy and plan, inclusive of reuse, recycle and composting initiatives is a national priority. However, government action is only part of the equation. Making the environment a personal priority through daily shifts, such as choosing reusable alternatives and practicing responsible waste disposal, safeguards our environment for years to come.

Let us work together to keep our islands clean, green, and resilient. Choose reusable, dispose responsibly, and learn more at gov.ky/cigpriorities/housing-infrastructure-environment.

The National Weather Service has officially lifted its Dust Alert as conditions improve across the Cayman Islands.

Following comprehensive testing, the Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability, the Public Health Department, and the Department of Environmental Health confirmed that air quality remains safely within the Good to Moderate range.

While conditions continue to clear, health officials advise proceeding cautiously with these ongoing recommendations:

⬛ Vulnerable Groups: Individuals with asthma or respiratory conditions should minimise prolonged outdoor exertion and keep prescribed medications handy.

⬛ General Public: Normal activities may resume, but move indoors and seek medical attention if you experience persistent coughing or wheezing.

⬛ Indoor Settings: Keep windows and doors closed where feasible and set air conditioning systems to recirculate indoor air.

The Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability and the Public Health Department have officially concluded the surveillance of BA253 passengers.

Following confirmation from the Bahamian Ministry of Health and Wellness that two passengers aboard the flight tested negative for the Ebola virus, health officials report that all established public health protocols were successfully completed with no concerns raised.

Local authorities extend their gratitude to the passengers for their cooperation and to the diligent teams at Public Health and Customs and Border Control. While the risk to the Cayman Islands remains low, officials continue to ensure appropriate screening measures remain in place for incoming travelers from impacted areas.

What steps are being taken to lower utility and fuel expenses for residents this summer?
A CI$9 million summer relief programme has been launched to address acute household affordability and lower energy expenses across our islands.

These temporary measures provide vital cost-of-living relief from June through September. Under this initiative, a residential electricity fuel cost charge cap automatically benefits nearly 90% of households. The program also waives import duties on gasoline, diesel, and propane to lower everyday costs, while establishing dedicated pathways for families with higher energy needs or life-sustaining medical equipment.

Lower prices at the gas pump will not be immediate on 1 June. Since the duty relief applies to new fuel shipments imported after this date, savings will take effect progressively as existing local inventory is cleared and stations restock. 🇰🇾
